I had a pleasure of spending last few days restoring home computer from severe system instability. After about 2 years since OS install system gave up a ghost in a violent way - restore points and latest backup could not save it. It is impressive that system survived abuse of careless S.O. for that long with just minimum intervention from me. Well it is format and start from clean install time, but this time I need to spend more time and effort securing PC to not have to redo it again.
So far I installed WinXP Pro, fully patched it, removed IE and installed Firefox, put draconian host file, installed AddAware and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, removed Outlook to force web-based email checking. What else can I do?
Q: I forgot how to disable autorun on all media - I need to make sure CD, USB drives and such don't install anything, like digital herpies
Q: How do I secure Word2003 so it is safe to open *any* file?
Q: ZoneAlarm - do I really need it on a PC behind router with a compulsive yes-clicker user?
Q: Data synchronization with work laptop - given that S.O. uses thankfuly-not-my-problem-to-maintain laptop what is the best way to synchronize data and minimize risks?

I use TweakUI from PowerToys to disable Autorun "in bulk". Otherwise you can right click on each drive go to Properties then Autorun and fiddle with each media type. Q: ZoneAlarm - do I really need it on a PC behind router with a compulsive yes-clicker user?
Do you mean behind a hardware firewall or are you using NAT? |

A: What Trippy said. A: You cannot. Use Word Viewer 2003 to view files. If you have to edit dodgy Internet files (why?!), use safe mode. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827706/A: Compulsive yes-clicker? Besides access filters you need scanning tools. At the very least you need SpyBot S&D and AdAware Pro running in scheduled mode. And some decent AV. A: You'd better reasonably trust the data first. Then the above tools need to scan the network/media used to introduce the data to the healthy system. Diligence. |

Also, pressing the shift key while inserting the media does the trick temporarily.

Use Word Viewer 2003 to view files Is it any safer than just Word? I think its just a viewer, so you can not edit any files, which is the reason why it is safer. But I am just guessing. :-D |
