Are you actually going to base your decision about whether or not to see SoaP on a review? It's a entertaining B horror-comedy movie which wants to be funny because it's ridiculous/bad(cliche or otherwise). It either tries too hard, too little, or does it just right. I guess that depends on your tolerance of bad movies, what you are expecting when you go to see it and the atmosphere you see it in because I'd imagine this movie would be much more enjoyable if the whole theater is laughing.

If/when I see SOAP, it is going to be with a reasonably high blood alcohol level. I can sit through nearly anything if I have enough hootch, plus it has been YEARS (almost decades, which fucking depresses the HELL out of me) since I have snuck booze into a movie theatre.

I saw it last night, at a 10:00 show. For what it was, it was good. A cheesy horror movie about snakes on a plane. There is some very funny stuff, just cause its SOOOO over the top. I enjoyed it. Also, the music video during the ending credits is awesome.

It's not "standing in line" because there is no line.  There's only you, standing outside the theater like a retard.

It was great.

Before the movie started, about 8 kids (late teens, I think, maybe early 20s) came in carrying a giant, home constructed snake made largely out of sheets and planks.  It was sort of like a chinese parade dragon.

Following them was one kid wearing a sheet and plank plane around his waist.

Of course, the entire audience cheered for them.

The audience was rowdy, loud, and perfectly appropriate for the movie.  Any other movie this would have irritated the crap out of me, but when Samuel L. Jackson is hitting on a girl and someone yelled "SHOW HER THE SNAKE!" it only enhanced the experience.

The entire audience chanted along with Samuel when the infamous "I'm tired of these motherfucking snakes etc etc" line came up.

I had fun with my friend pointing out who would die and who would live.  Everyone I said would survive did, but a lot more people got out alive than I expected.

If you're in the right mindset and can see this with a fun audience (read: late night), there's no reason not to see this movie.

All I can hope for is that the fad dies off reasonably quick as it spends a few weeks in theatres.

Maybe I'm just old but all I see is a bad movie. Samuel L. Jackson certainly is cool and all, but I'm gonna pass thanks.

Some things transcend being 'just a bad movie' and instead become some sort of cultural experience.  Think of it like RHPS.

The experience was very much how I imagine that to be.  People were totally into it.

Oh, and drink heavily before the movie, if you can.

Snakes slithers into first with a modest opening

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The Internet buzz over "Snakes on a Plane" turned out to be nothing to hiss about.

The high-flying thriller preceded by months of unprecedented Web buildup technically debuted as the No. 1 movie, but with a modest $15.25 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Take that internet.

How much did it cost to make?

AFAIK the budget was low - but once they felt they had a hit on their hand, the ad budget was pumped up accordingly.  So who knows.

I really hate that when articles mention how much a movie cost to make, they almost never take ad/marketing budgets into account.

The budget wasn't low, but it wasn't high either. $36 Million.

Mediocre is talking out of his ass about pumping up the ad budget. That's where they paid virtually nothing.

It was almost completely driven by internet hype. Studios pay $30 million alone or more for this kind of publicity. Supposedly, they only had a pay a few million for this.

True.  I was going on what I'd heard from hearsay, which is that once they realized the movie actually had legs the ad budget got pumped up.  Looks like I heard wrong.

Quote
The average big studio movie costs an average of $63.6 million to produce and another $34.4 million to market. "SoaP" ran New Line only $36 million to make and reportedly, 10 days before opening, it had spent only 7 percent of its $30 million marketing budget promoting the film.

So there you have it.

My general point about people not mentioning the marketing costs for most movies is still true, though - as noted above, it usually runs about as much as the production budget.

Live Rattlesnakes Released In 'Snakes On A Plane' Theater
http://www.local6.com/news/9717727/detail.html

In my homntown, er, cross town from my Glendale confines...

Quote
Two live diamondback rattlesnakes were released in an Arizona movie theater during a showing of the new film "Snakes on a Plane," according to Local 6 News.

Authorities said pranksters released the young venomous rattlesnakes in a dark theater at the AMC Desert Ridge near Tatum and Loop 101 in Phoenix.

The two snakes caused a panic in the dark theater, according to the report.

"That to me is very scary," herpetological association representative Tom Whiting said. "I would hate to be watching a movie about snakes and have a rattlesnake bite me."

Wranglers were called to collect the snakes, the report said.

No one was injured in the incident and, so far, the culprits have not been caught.

Officials believe the snakes were smuggled into the theater in backpacks.

"This thing is under someone's chair and they go to sit and they just push your foot in the air and startle it -- obviously all they got to do is startle this thing," Phoenix Herpetological Society spokesman Daniel Marchand said. "It's dark. They can't see you, you know that well. If it's scared, boom it strikes."

The snakes were released into the desert.
