Just let me be the first to say it:

FUCKING EH, THEY LOOK COOL  (preserved just for Signe)

The origional website, at Angelfire

The movie, saved by the grace of Azhrarn's cache file

I really hope Cloaks, Dresses, Scarves and the like look just as good.

I may look into finding out what he did to get the capes running, and see if it is still doable.  he seems to hint that he did it by editing a file already in the game, indicating that the tech used is ALREADY present in the code.

That's really frickin cool looking. Except when running backwards. I'd also like to see flight and superjump with it and not just a n00bie hopping around.

Daddy like.  I'm now wondering what kind of Elton John getup I can create with a cape for Cpt. Pansy.  Possibly fur lined capes?

Ooooh, and I wonder if you can add a logo to the capes?

Nice, very nice.  Looks like they got the motion just right - I wish they had shown some flying and leaping segments though.

Now I'm going to have to design a costume for eV that would work well with a cape.

edit:  P.S. Fuck Angelfire, seriously.

It's a newb character - he's doing the tutorial - so he couldn't demonstrate flying.  But you can see what the cape will do during leaping, just watch when he jumps over the fence.

After looking at it again, there is still quite a bit of clipping around the shoulders when the figure runs backwards.  So it's not perfect but its still the best cape I've seen in a agame.

Heh- I was busily beating my head against my keyboard in frustration when I got here. I am guessing from the context that this is some sort of screenshot of capes in action?

Well I was going to put it on my ftp server for you but I'm getting weird errors there and I ain't got time to fix it just now.

It's a couple minute long .wmv file of a noob running through the noob area with a cape.  According to teh devs on the official boards that footage wasn't ment to see the light of day as it's of a proof of concept implementation or something similar and 'not ready for prime time'.

As I said above although the motion of the cape looks excellent though there are some serious clipping issues with it.

If I find the time to unfuck my ftp server I'll put up a link for you thats not angelfire.  Or you can just cut and paste the above link into your browser nav bar and it should work fine.

The WMV file is gone, but there are still two screenshots at http://www.angelfire.com/comics/coh_capes/.

Yay for an obscenely oversized file cache.

Interesting capes, although it just looks like a narrow rag hanging off his back.  Not exactly an impressive flowing cape of JUSTICE.  Of course it wasn't meant to see the light of day yet.  Once they fix the clipping issues, and make it a little less stiff, it should be nice.

They left the clipping issues in with long haired huge body types, they'll probably leave it on the capes. Cool > perfection imo.

Great googly moogly.

I'd have been more than happy with that at release. The only real issues with clipping I saw were when the guy ran backwards the cape seemed to clip through them. Being that we're used to having no capes or stiff as board cloaks like in DAoC, those were fantastic.

Just another example of a crew that doesn't want things in the game that they haven't polished to their idea of perfection (or close to it).

Yeah, it's unnerving.  We really should enjoy it while we can, because after a year of dealing with MMOG subscribers, ie. us, we're going to grind that right out of them.

I'm sure every frame of that cape movement was hand animated.  That video represents a year of some 3d animator's life.

My understanding is that the capes are not animated at all.  It is a physics cloth simulation system.  Like they have in Splinter cell and lots of other games these days.  Once they nail the physics they can make different capes and different capelike cloths without having to hand animate them all.

I just read some dev posts on the beta boards about this video: they're saying that the video shows "early prototype cape technology" made by someone who "cracked some files on the demo builder inside the game and got the original, rejected capes stuff from there".  In other words, CoH capes won't look like that, because the devs deemed that it didn't look good enough.

Heheh ya and if those don't look good enough I imagine the final product should be pretty darn spiffy. I do not see my defender taking a cloak but my magic controller likely will if they look decent at all.

Ah, those were the "rejected" capes.  These guy's greatest strength is that they don't have the "it compiles, lets ship it" business plan.

Capes now announced for the next 'big patch'.

You can only get them at lvl 20, after having 'earnt' them in some as yet unspecified way.

There's even a whole plot explanation on www.coh.com now.
