I just got back from the Egyptian theater here in Seattle where I saw this great movie. I don't want to overhype it, but it has so much for just about everyone, especially the folks that frequent these boards, that I felt I should put out the good word on it.
If you're into new animation techniques, see it. If you're into Philip K Dick, see it, because its one of the best, if not the best book-to-movie efforts I've seen. If you're into conspiracy theories, see it. If you're into California slacker, drug addled dialogue ala Clerks meets Naked Lunch, see it. If you're into post modernism and the attending philosophy, see it.
Those are just a few of the reasons I can think of off the top of my head. I wish I could provide some negative criticism, so as to appear 'unbiased', but I'm afraid I'm in love with this movie. Be warned, it is not a Grade A USDA Prime Hollywood flick. Its more like that great burrito stand that only locals know about.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

If you're into California slacker, drug addled dialogue ala Clerks meets Naked Lunch, see it. Why not just mention other Linklater films? That dialogue you're hearing can come from nobody but him. He made a film called "Slacker" actually... If you're love with this film, then you'll probably like that one. Or Waking Life. You'll probably like that. Same theme, same animation, same dialogue style, etc.

Or rotoscoping. I'm looking forward to this one.

In any case, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr provide excellent comic relief in an otherwise dark movie.

It's cool to see both of them back. Downey is one of my favorite actors.
And for the umpteenth time I've said it around here, I'm in love with Winona Ryder. She's not even that good of an actress, I'll admit.....But I'll watch anything with her in it. Event that damn Quilt movie.

She has great boobs and a much better than average face. I'd like to see her and Scarlett do a remake of Therese and Isabelle.

I'd like to be in that remake, and be the only one who gets to see it.

If the ending is faithful to the book, people will mostly hate it. I see that as a good thing.

We still talking about lesbians here? I don't see how anyone could hate that. Faithful or not.

I meant A Scanner Darkly. Not gonna commit to any answer on lesbians, for that is a headache of a conversation I don't feel like dealing with at this moment.

Umm...Ok?
Sounds serious.
Also, I knew you were talking about Scanner...But nevermind.
Damn, that reply really confuses me.

Damn, Winona and Scarlett naked together in a church would be awesome.
Oh, and I'm going to see Scanner this week sometime. Probably before we go to JAPANESE MAGIC DINNER BENIHANA SHOW on Friday.

I get to see it at a local film festival. I thought it would be sold out for sure but I had no trouble snagging a ticket. Also getting to see Seven Swords (yay wuxia), Rampo Noir (yay J-horror), and Tideland (Terry Gilliam's new project)

Yeah I was going to say that rotoscoping is old tech, but this is more rotoscoping + cell shading. Winona is hot. I love me my Winona! My first psuedo-girlfriend was a Winona Ryder lookalike. (Or a cheap knockoff anyway) If you're into post modernism and the attending philosophy, see it.
You know that's very interesting, because while Dick certainly does fit the textbook definition of postmodernism to a large degree I can't imagine him being called a postmodern writer and being lumped in what that wretched, steaming pile of trash. Really almost everything written in the past 40 years is postmodern, but for some reason the list of typically recognized postmodern authors is much narrower than the definition should imply.

Well, like any relatively new literary/philosophical outlook, it will be crowded by pretentious wannabes. I'm sure that the romantic period of poetry had its share of dorks, and only after centuries have the ones we now consider classics emerged as the only ones worth mentioning. The same may eventually be true for postmodern literature. On the other hand, I think what you may be getting at is that the category is so vaguely defined that just about anyone can be lumped into it, including Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, William Gibson and even Tolkein, at a stretch.

Yeah, I know what you mean. You just can't get the parts these days. Not very many suppliers. And when you find one, they don't even put the fucking lotion on the skin. What's a psuedo-girlfriend anyway ? Is that like a realdoll ? Those things are creepy.

Yeah, I saw that, but frankly, I think the movie grew in strength the longer it was on -- the begining was fairly weak and the ending was terrific.

It looks like I'm going to have to wait for video, as there's nothing within a couple hundred miles of me showing this.

I saw it last weekend at a matinee showing. It was worth the $10 I paid. Very trippy and addled. It'd be a good movie to watch drunk, particularly with the colorful animation.
