As mentioned in my other thread, I just got out of a screening of Superman Returns.  And lo an behold, what should the studios have sent us to attach on said print, but the newest trailer for Spiderman 3 (what DC would have to say about advertising Marvel's big movie on their print, I really have to wonder).

Anyhow, Spiderman 3:

- Sandman (we already knew this)
- The Symbiote is IN, Pretty much the ENTIRE trailer is focused around Parker and his battle with the mind altering effects / vicious nature of the Symbiote suit.  Hell, the trailer opens with the text (may have slightly misquoted, but you get the idea) "How long can any man battle the darkness, before he finds it within himself".  No idea on how the symbiote is introduced (im betting Jameson Junior on a space mission), but the weakness to sound is in (scene of him in a belltower fighting with the suit).  So this pretty much validates my theory that they are going to do the Symbiote backstory in one movie and likely schedule Venom as the tour-de-force villian for Spidey 4.
- A Goblin makes an appearance: Im betting on young, mentally unstable and probably drunk / high Osbourne trying for vengeance for pops.

Darwinism is the Gateway Science.

Awesome, after this nothing can stop a Wolverine/Gambit/Dazzler teamup against Venom and Carnage.

Venom makes me weep.

Seriously, the costume saga was an ok story and fairly interesting.  Even, I suppose, the initial creation of Venom and the first fight was interesting.

What happened thereafter was a total joke that highlights one of the main weaknesses of Marvel.

But the film looks interesting.

Dammit.

The impression given by the noise in the press seems to be that the suit is the source of angst for this film and the villian for the next film.

Which suggests Brock is only being introduced as a normal guy in this film until maybe right at the end.

That has to be good news.

I might be just trying to rationise now, but Venom *could* be done well, I guess the shittiness of the comic story doesn't preclude changes for the film.

I'm sick and tired of the goblin shit though.

When you're tired of Goblin, you're tired of Spiderman.

Same as it ever was.

However, I still agree that Tobey is simply awesome as Peter Parker.  I really doubt anyone could do it better.  Althought Dunst needs to lay off the coke.  She's heading for death.

Kirsten Dunst sucks as Mary Jane.  Were I casting director for the Spidey movies I'd have snatched up Alicia Witt so fast it'd make your head spin.

So is the blonde he's dancing with supposed to be Gwen Stacy or what?

...And Topher Grace is Eddie Brock?

I saw a clip from the film of a newspaper headline saying "GWEN STACY KILLED BY SPIDER-MAN", so I assume that's her.

They should have just dropped the Stacy bit and and have Harry throw Mary Jane off the Brooklyn Bridge. That would work.

That was my girlfriend's question after I gave her the rundown on the symbiote plot. She also thought the Sandman was odd casting. After the perfect villian casting in the first two, I'm wondering if it'll be a let-down, but I withhold judgement until I've seen it.

Perhaps it helps that I didn't know the actor that played the Sandman before, but :  The guy has consistently looked perfectly cast to me.  As long as he is able to sustain even a modicum of acting talent, it'll be fine.  Bear in mind that this guy is probably NOT going to have to handle the heavy-weight of the film in the same way as Goblin or Ock did.  He's a minor villain.

Church is a good actor, I'm sure he'll handle the role just fine.  He played a far different role than Lowell in Ned & Stacy and surprised me (even though the show didn't last long.)  He was also in Sideways if you ferin'ers want to check-out one of his more recent jobs.

He was also in Tombstone, which most people seem to forget (including me until I IMDB'd him)  He's far less 'wtf' than Topher Grace as Brock.  Not because of Grace's physique, but because any time he tries to convey any kind of emotion it always comes out as a whiney screech. (Not just based on That 70's Show but also In Good Company which is the only other thing I've seen him in.)

If you are going by the Ultimate Spider-Man Brock, then it makes perfict sence. That brock was a whiney little punk.

Ah, ok then.  I've never seen Ultimate other than a few shots on the 'net.  I always figured that defense was being used for his physique, not his personality.

That may be, but I thought they were both awesome in movie 2. The villains have left something to be desired, however I would not replace Kirsten Dunst. But I liked The Libertines so maybe I'm too forgiving of drugfuckedness.

I have no idea what Triforcer means by that.

Does he mean that it's "elitist" or something? If so, it's got Lowell and Paul Giamatti for crissakes!!! LOWELL. How the fuck can it be elitist?

Or does he mean that it's just another age crisis story (except Sideways deals with the 30's, I believe)? If so, then yeah....I guess.

That being said, I will say that I put off watching it for a long time, because of some suspicions (just like I did with Fight Club, now that someone mentions it).

Its not elitism exactly.  Remember how with Fight Club there was always the kid in the quad playing ultimate frisbee who insisted you didn't understand the movie on as many levels as he did?  If that kid grows up, has a wife and kids and buys a minivan and a nice house in the suburbs, Sideways is the movie he'd insist you don't understand on as many levels as he did.  Matrix/Fight Club/Sideways are the latest in a line of movies that hint at faux deepness just well enough for 15 year olds and various others fuckwits to pretend they have original thoughts.

And to answer your question Triforcer, no, I don't remember the kid who played "Ultimate Frisbee". But just to be fair, if I had met him, I would have punched him in the nose and told him not to talk about Fight Club.

Just so you know, Ultimate Frisbee is a very large staple of ROTC PT sessions.  They play that shit ALOT.
