Futurama Back From the Past.

I picked it up today, it was good, but seemed to really drag at parts.

Some snappy bits, but too much stuff shoehorned in.

DVD will be here tomorrow via Amazon.

Earlier today it was #3 on Amazon's best sellers this week.

That bodes well for new episodes after the movies are complete!

They are supposed to be making like 2-3 more movies, that will be broke up into 4 episode chunks.  Those episodes will be the next "season" of Futurama on Cartoon Network.

That was the last that I had heard.  I'm not sure if they are doing any more seasons after the four movies.

In February 2007, Groening clarified speculation as to whether Futurama had been revived in episodic or feature-film form, saying "[The crew is] writing them as movies and then we're going to chop them up, reconfigure them, write new material and try to make them work as separate episodes."

I think Futurama runs about a million per episode, so the DVD sales would have to be impressive to warrant a new commitment*.

I think I will buy the movies as they come out, but I am going to skip the DVD when they repackage them as episodes, even though I have the S1-S4 boxes.

I also didn't like them name-checking all the random characters for no reason. Stuff like "The Hedonist Bot" loses its humor when you overuse it. He should be popped out sparingly, when it's really, really funny.  The Globetrotter joke was totally played already; that should not have come back.

I did really like the Al Gore stuff. That guy is a good sport.

I was happy just to have any new futurama at this stage. It was decent overall, but not stellar. I agree with whoever said that it dragged at times, and I think that as was also seen in the Simpson's movie, Matt Groening's genius doesn't really extend beyond 45 mins, and consequently these feature length episodes do feel a little drawn out in some scenes.

As an imminent precursor to new seasons though I'm over the fucking moon.

I thought the movie was great.  I made the mistake of expecting too much from the Family Guy movie and, while it was funny, it didn't live up to my unfounded expectations.

To the point that it dragged:  I think that in the episodes, they have about 22 minutes to get in everything that they want to and a lot is left on the table when it is finished.  With a movie, the writers can follow a broader story and naturally some parts will drag.  Futurama has never been all the funny - they like to tell stories.

But there were some parts that were absolutely hilarious.

I'd agree, it just seemed like there were about 22 minutes of hilarity and then a lot of filler. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, just that I think I'll be happier when the show is being presented in its native format :)

If you ever get the chance....

I caught one of the "Simpsons: In the Flesh" things a couple years ago,  where they have the actors (or their understudies) read a script from the show and Matt Groenig does some talking and Q&A.

Dan Castellaneta was funny as shit, even doing some of the facial expressions/body language when he was doing Homer.  Hell, everyone was funny.  The reading was great.  They did the "pro-soccer/Homer gets a gun" episode.
