I just played it, not knowing anything about it. I didn't even know what genre it is, let alone the premise.

Holy. Crap.

 shocked

I highly recommend it...especially if you go into it without any prior knowledge.

Won't run.  Crashes as soon as it's launched.

This demo gets my highest rating ever: thirteen thumbs up.  Ho. Lee. Shit.  Don't read anything about it, just play.

A lot of people are having my problem, the crash is associated with the openal32.dll file.  Some people have had success by updating that file at openal.org (not me) and others by updating thier sound drivers (again not me).

So if you are having the same issue you can try that but obviously, YMMV.

That was a pretty cool tech demo, and the opening is one of the best FPS openings I've seen in a long while. Seems like the gameplay is pretty standard FPS run-n-gun stuff though; the demo level didn't really show off any neat AI features. The enemies took cover, but we've had that since.. oh.. Half-Life, at least.

You are absolutely right, however I have given up on AI.  Having some smart enemies would be awesome in any game, but they haven't gotten any smarter since 1997 and I have decided to ignore that factor... especially since the one hopeful (HL2) completely failed to raise the bar.  Add to that the fact that I was really expecting another SiN Episodes, and I was thoroughly delighted.

I actuallly don't want to give away anything in the forum, so I'll just say that I appreciated all of the little touches as well as the presentation.  Now, will it do an Oblivion (or many other games, really) and have a great and detailed intro area but slowly devolve into a more bland version of itself?

I have also come to realize that the Age of Digital Distribution's dark side is that I am going to have fifty different delivery applications installed on my machine.

Are you using the latest DirectX c distro?  If not, you might need to download and install it.  I was receiving the same error message a few days ago while trying to log into everquest after their big direct x update patch.

I have been waiting since 1997 to play Prey and holy shit it looks like it was worth the wait.  The main character says some of the funniest stuff I've heard in a vid game.  A must buy for me.

I was pleasantly surprised to see an FPS at least make some attempt at a story line, of some sort. New cool additions to the genre are fabulous, and I really like the simplicity of game play.

All that said, nothing can eclipse the experience of an exploding wall anus, complete with dismembered bodily parts being hurled/yuked/shat at you.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Well, unless the protagonist also exclaims "This is some fucked-up shit!" and follows up in the next room with: "No... THIS is some fucked up shit!"  Wall anus, indeed.  Planet-in-a-box?  My brain hurts now, and I want more.

I tried DM Multiprey this evening. No rubberbanding on the servers I went on - just make sure you adjust your connection speed down from T1/LAN.

It was completely chaotically insane. Jumping from gravity area to gravity area, running along those special gravstrips, gunning away at people completely oblivious to someone at a bizarre incline to their own 'normal'.

If they had more than just DM/TDM in, even just some kind of CTF... this would be an almost instant buy for the multiplayer aspect alone. The gravity on the maps just changes shit up all kinds of weird ways.

When I was looking over job descriptions back when I worked at walmart as receiving mgr, the only difference between mine and my buddy who was a truck unloader was the ability to pick up a paperclip. I shit you not. (re: Yeg's avatar)

The video, Prey was hot shit for that era of 3d. I used to dislike "3d" games before Quake (excepting Ultima Underworld), Doom (the original) makes me lol :)

I would like to think that my post is more funny after you play the demo and rewatch the video.

Also: I find it odd that my paperclip avatar is more popular than my Ron Jeremy avatar.

I finally installed it. Really impressive. Is it using its own engine or Doom 3's? It looks strikingly similar to Doom 3's, and that would explain why it runs so well on my system despite me cranking it up to max (well, at 1024x768 since it doesn't seem to support my preferred res of 1280x960).

Also, did anyone notice the game taboo this game breaks with extraordinarily violent gusto? I was shocked in a good way when I saw it. A dev with actual balls!

What are you referring to? (Haven't played it)

I remember reading about Prey when it was first in development in 1997-98 or so, because I was working on something similar at the time. (Cell/portal rendering) Pretty cool that it's finally coming out and is actually good.

We had a tech demo in 96-97 where you could look though a portal into a totally separate space and walk through it seamlessly.

I suppose I can just flat out say it. There are kids in the game and they die. Pretty violently too.

Ah, but one isn't a kid.

They're kids that are possessed and killing eachother. I don't think the adults go around killing kids.

I think Rule of Rose is going to break down that taboo completely anyway. Whatwith lesbian pre-pubescent kids killing eachother and getting killed by otherworldly forces. And yes, I meant to say lesbian - it's not a "joke."
