C'thun's main eye attack is a beam that is similar to a Shaman's chain lightning. It will arc from a distance of less than 8 yards from person to person, doubling damage each time. It starts at a easily healable 1.5-2k. If you're the third man in the chain, you are dead.

He attacks the first person he sees three times before starting to beam random people in the raid for the duration of the fight (well, the duration of phase 1 anyway). What's SUPPOSED to happen is you have a high NR hunter (hunter so that he can FD into his normal gear) run in and take the first 3 hits, giving time for everyone to split around him and get into position (spaced out to prevent arcs) in the room.

What happened there was me twitching on the go call, and peeking out by accident, and being the first person he saw. I got the first three hits instead of the intended target.

yeah, we had that happen to one of our raids also. Someone twitched a bit too close to him and got half the raid fried to a crisp.  I think the last person in the chain got nailed for around 1.6 million nature damage.

Interestingly enough, Cthun is not the only mob in the game who does this.  High Preist Venoxis in Zul'Gurub also has a similar chaining attack.  If you have ever had a bunch of mele clustered around him, and that one ranged guy get just close enough to be the proper distance between your mele and ranged teams and suddenly half your raid instantly bites the dust, that is what happened.

Lord Valthalak in the tier0.5 quests has an attack like this too, only it's always aimed at the tank (like venoxis).
