I wondered what a black snake was, so I googled it. I thought that this explanation was amusing:

black snake, name for several snakes, not all closely related, that are black in color. In the United States the name is applied chiefly to the black racer and to the black rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta), both partly arboreal in their habits. The black rat snake, also called pilot black snake and mountain black snake, is found in the NE United States.

We had a black rat snake as a pet growing up, it usually shared time at our house and at our grade school as a class pet for either my sister or myself.. Ours was probably around 5 - 5 1/2 feet long. When we finished grade school we agreed to let the school keep it for future classes. Moreso after the incident where it wrapped itself around my dad's arm and it took both of us to pry the thing off.
