So I've had my shiny new plate armor for a day or two. Me and two other newbs are in Brit cemetery, feeling heroic because we just ganked a wraith to death. (It was the first thing we had defeated that could use magic.) Up walks some other newb in a robe and orc helm, asking if he can join us. We say yes. I believe his name was Stormbringer.
He says we should go to the Britain crossroads and hunt for orcs. Any remotely experienced player would know that those crossroads are PK central, but again, we're raw newbies. So we get out there, and not much of anything happens, actually. We hike up the road and, after an initial moment of panic, manage to kill an ogre. Holy shit, we're kicking ass and taking names now.
Well we get halfway to Yew, and still we haven't been attacked by a PK. Slow day or something. One of the dumber newbs, who doesn't even have any armor at all (despite the fact that I knew he had been playing at least as long as me), attacks a bear for some reason and is getting torn up. Just as I'm jumping in to help him, the bear just sort of... FWAP... dies.
Stormbringer the newb just blew it out with a flamestrike. What the fuck? He takes his robe and orc helm off, to reveal his spiffy black and purple outfit. Then he tells us that he's actually a 7xGM PK hunter, who hooked up with our group to use us as bait. I suppose we should have been put off by this, but whatever. We thought it was cool. Since we were good sports about it, he says he'll take us to Delucia, then back to Britain if we so choose. Mind you, none of us have really even left the outskirts of Britain before.
Having never played an MMO before, and not having gone very far in UO at this point, the trip to Delucia was just this god damned epic journey. We went through caves, and a lighthouse, and fought all sorts of weird fucking monsters that I'd never seen before. Finally we got there, and it was so different from Britain, with it's much smaller size and jungle aesthetic. After a trip around town to see the place and do a little shopping, Storm asks us if we want to return to Brit.
Mind you, this is a serious decision. I don't have any runes or reagents to recall with, nor any real idea of how to get them. And Delucia to Britain would be a bloody long walk for me on my own, assuming I even remembered the way correctly. But what the hell, right? All the other newbs wanted to go home, so I bid them all farewell, and spent the next week or two killing orcs in the foothills outside Delucia.
My first few weeks of UO were the greatest time I've ever had in any game ever. After a while it became less cool adventures and more of the "Oh for shit's sake, there were two of you and I was at half health fighting a monster!" asshattery the game was famous for. But those first couple weeks? Golden.

Golden, WUA. I have the same kind of memories and I so much agree with you. UO's freedom was so out of scale that there wasn't any need for content. Players did all the content. Was it the FFA PvP? Was it the lack of levels? Was it the "humanity" of the Characters and their skill and stat caps that never made 'em demigods-like? Was it the simple mechanic of not being able to assess your opponent's strength at all, leading to a PvP often based on bluffs and deception? Am I wrong when I say that such kind of things were great and STILL, will never happen again in MMO history?
Really, really wonder why.

The gaming industry is full of copycats. Maybe a smaller company will go ...Hey, UO still has a nice chunk of subs after 10 years. What did they do right? Its not that hard to see the differences between this game and all the other EQ clones. Why is it that I can pick this game up again and be totally enthralled once more? Maybe because it is such a roller coaster ride. 2 nights ago i was out with Cheddar and his 2 dragons. Myself as a near 7x tank mage (93 resist) make a pretty good healer and Cheddar saver most the time, but in the lich lord room I made a grand mistake. A tamer named Donkey Punch gated in, Cheddar made the right move and gated his dragons out (they arent cheap). I was foolish, and decided to try to finish the Ancient Lich we were killing. The tamer decided it was smackdown time, and I was very low on mana and choked and died. I made more mistakes in that encounter than in the last 9 days combined (no GHs, greed, didnt gate out with Chedd (gave a tamer the benefit of the doubt not to be a killer). The real kick to the dick was I had an unIDed halbard off a lich lord, could have been a real gem and about 7k on me. I was down for the next hour or 2, pissed off at myself for my incompentance. But, as all things life goes on. I decide to check up on a few of my 'Greatly Worn' houses that I spotted recently. What do we have here? A small IDOC had started (on this server IDOCs are exactly 36 hours). The problem being I had competition. A two account using red had opened shop with a small house behind the IDOC, and out of chance a friend of mine (the guy that gave us our first small house deed) had also placed a house next door. He co-ownered me to the house and we began the long process of waiting this thing out. I brought my Dexer there to keep an eye out, hidden just out of tracking range of the enemy. Some hours pass, and I receive a message from my ghosted friend Chinchilla "IT DROOOOOPPPPPPEEDDDD!!!". Chedd and myself were doing our usual lich spanking and i immediately open the gate (Like he said earlier, like the miltary Shock and Awe are our best friends : Dragons). Within a minute, we have all the boxes unloaded to our house and locked down, no fight or anything (kinda anti-climactic I know). The former owner was definetely a PK (or HEAVY order type guy). He had bags upon bags of obviously looted gear (GM weapons and armor all by different crafters), probably 100 GM Halbys, thousands of each reg, thousands of bandaids, around 20k in loose gold, 8k in gems, a box full of magic weapons (good stuff , power+), a box full of magic armor (good stuff, Fort+), potion kegs and loose bags full of pots, tons of GM leather....and tons more. A very cool prize was a Journal written by some random guy in January of this year...telling his story of some encounters with Reds but very well done and in character. In the end, we didnt trust our prize to the guy who let me borrow his house, and we placed our own in the IDOC spot. We are now officially on our feet. So within 2 days I went from the gutter to butter baby. Name another game with swings like that. Its kinda like No limit Texas Holdem poker, a lot of people dont like it...they cant handle the swings. Speaking of Hold'em, they have it at the Britian Bank on top of it :) Gotta love IDOCs!!! Wooooo

Yeah, I remember tons of fights of IDOC's. They'd last for a full day with several people taking shifts. It would always come down to that last 2 minutes as things got swooped up and people got ganked. Fun!
Back then though, housing space was very valuable, meaning people would pay RL money for houses. The ultimate contest was placing a house down before anyone else could. Man, that would get heated as the prize was anywhere from $50-$100 in that person's pocket.
Crazy.
*Edit* Same thing for rare spawns. People went nuts for that stuff and paid RL money for em. I knew a guy in our guild that made like 8k in one year doing that crap. It paid for his trip to NO for one of our guild get-togethers and several nice toys.

On Atlantic, IDOCs were insane. That place had every house spot taken earlier on in its life...from then on a house deed that cost you 20k would net you 500-1mil gold. Everyone would cock block and have a ghost or hidden guy there or something, i forget the old tricks. If I was lucky I'd usually score a chunk of loot and escape. Server birth rares were insanely priced, and even daily rares could fetch some decent coinage... Definetely another UO experience unmatched in any other game.

Okay, you bastards got me. I'm downloading the client and getting all set up to play on Metropolis shard. It just sounds like you're having too much fun and it's summer. It looks like a very well done free shard, too. I tried free shards once before, but never found one that I could settle on. Hope to see you in-game soon.

They also have all sorts of events on the shard...there is a crazy CTF game, a Double Domination game, and they did some event for 6/6/6 last night that we missed...oh yeah, midnight eastern the server stops saving for Server Wars....Britian is fuckin chaos for about 25 min! No guards!

The other thing that I haven't seen since UO in my experience is real life guild get-togethers. We had 2 during our stint in the game. One in KC the other in NO. They were both drunken blasts. For the most part, the people turned out to be really great.
It figures you guys are doing this during my transition to another job, which includes a move. I'll try to get online, but I'm not sure how much time I can dedicate until late summer after the move.

The beauty of UO (as well as Eve's offline training) is that you can gain skills without being there. Each IP is allowed 3 accounts, and you can run the clients at the same time. We'd be glad to have ya around, even on a limited basis....since the IDOC we can get some nice gear on ya anyways. Message me if you need any help setting up macros or getting UO Gateway working and stuff...or i can just help get ya a character rolling if you wanna give me account info... We actually had a WoW get together...us guys from Flint MI drove to Wisconsin and partied hard for a weekend with about 5 guildies...was good times...

Even I was in on the money from UO and early EQ. I had a villa of houses, most of an entire peninsula north of vesper that I made about $50-75 per small house and a couple hundred for my big patio house with a forge (for the nearby-ish boat mining). It hurt me to sell it off, while I can understand OSI's desire to free up housing space...there was the vast southron wasteland of the Lost Lands from the expansion that went from planned towns to no-build zone. So I just sold off my Atl property. Also made a bundle on rares from server births, good times. Helped get me by for a year while I was DJing and being a general lazabout (along with my domination of fishbone earrings and whatnot). A lot of rares became craftable, iirc. I used to use a cool bass harp from Britian for my bard, it made a different sound than anything else used to back then.

That's freakin awesome, WUA. That's like a story straight out of UO Year 1.
I'm on Divinity as Slyfeind, usually running around Trinsic. I tried Metropolis, but it's just too densely packed for my tastes.

That was a fun little IDOC we had last night :). I remember getting over there and talking with my wife about when we think it might drop and then about 1 hr later... *plop*. No one was at the location for awhile while I was typing out [msg (*scroll through to Slayer's name) IT DROPPPED!, then [msg (*scroll again for his wife's char name) IT DROPPPED...
THEN [msg (*scroll through for Cheddar) and IN comes Cheddar and 3 dragons tailing him. And then comes Slayer's wife and then Slayer. The whole time I'm there shitting myself thinking... "God damn it I should have gotten a character there to start grabbing, instead I'm some fucking USELESS GHOST!" All I can do is watch so I can report to them! ARGGHHH!! My wife was like... "SHIT, Where is it?" and She was on her way over there.
OH MY GOD THE RUSH OF THIS FREAKING GAME! Ultimately if that Pker friend of their's was even going to consider anythnig he had 3 dragons to play with. My wife almost got the beat down when Cheddar said "All KILL" and clicked my wife haahhahah :) he didn't know it was her. He was fast as shit with selecting her too. She was like.... "Oh ShIT!!" I almost pissed myself laughing.

My #1 issue with Divinity. No macroing of resources and other macroing restrictions. Count me out. I like macroing for my T-maps :). Otherwise it would be boring as sin. Plus getting my ore for my blacksmithy. I don't want to even begin to imagine how long that would have taken doing by hand (I burned up like 60K in ore to GM it).

I believe they also have a 1 account rule. Screw that. Also, statloss on PKs if their bounty passes 5000 gold.... Sounds kinda Carebear to me :) Ok well, gotta go. I have 50 miners to kill today to meet my quota. And metropolis is not that populated...its not like UO:Hybrid , maybe a fifth of the players they have on. If ya change your mind, you know where to find us :)

You can type "[msg" hit Enter. A list of players will show up and then scroll through and look for either Cheddar, Slayerik, Chinchilla, Andric, or anyone else you may know. We will hook you up and help ya. I logged onto UO-Hybrid and I still can't figure out why its so populated. Most of the people I saw were standing around on their pretty little neon colored mounts and crap. Reminded me of the crappy post-Origin now EA games UO that exists. I knew there was a problem when I ran around for 1 hour and didn't even see a PK or even was attempted to be PKed. It gave me flash backs of an old MMOG my wife used to play called "The Realm". The people would stand around town and such in their "pretty" armor and that's it. Not go fight, not go PK, just stand around. It was like some big fashion show. Imagine MIRC, but with medieval cartoony characters in pretty colors. That's kewl if you are into that, but there's a reason why I don't play Sims Online. I want some ACTION! ___________________________________ Edit: /RANT ON Well I just went onto their forums to see why so populated and its because its another freaking Trammel-esq shard (carebear). Murderers can walk in town freely (reds in town), they have those "special attacks" that cheesy UO now has, and this other silly crap that IS NOT the UO I remember from the early years. Makes me want to vomit! What the HELL is the point of being red then? Just so it shows that you killed someone? Oh wow, so fancy. I would never play this hacked up version of UO. What a waste of time. /RANT OFF

I can't promise, but my plan is to check into this when I get back to town on Sunday. I have Monday off too, so that's extra special . I'm actually going to be in SW Michigan since that is where my new job will be. Chicago, South Bend, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, etc. all close by, but somewhat rural. Nice area.

I see how it is. I get left out like chopped liver. Oh the agony and sadness. ______________________________ IDOC status: Well that smelted ore heavy house was loaded with ore to the hilt. So who wants some FREE ARMOR!!! Roughly 10K in Iron, 30K in copper, had some Agapite and other stuff. My wife read the list off fast so I didn't get it all written down. It fell around roughly 10:30am. My wife got it for you guys.

How is the PvP structured on that shard? I mean, is it mostly gate waring or is it C/O fighting in towns or guild wars setup for certain times/places? I've been through all of that over the years and I'm fine with it all. I'm just wondering. Although, house fighting at the moongates was the worst.

TBH, I havent done a ton of PVP yet. From what Ive seen there are some Chaos orders running around. I hear a lot of the PVP happens at Bucs den. Factions are supposed to be released in the future sometime. From what Ive seen, its mostly random world encountr...a red at a rune library, or popular dungeon spots. Destard entrance always seems to have trouble nearby. Chincilla, my bad on not puttin ya on the list, you are still fresh f13 meat :) At the same time, you are my hero for scoring those ingots...i figured it was like another 12 hrs from now! Does metropolis have a skillcap with the typical 7xGM templates? Is it just one character per account? If so, is there a limit to how many accounts somebody can have?
I rolled up a mage without thinking and it stuck me with 25 str/hp, so I'm probably going to axe him for a new char.

3 accounts per IP, 5 characters per account. Reroll him, 60 str... Use advanced char. option, I advise 50 resist , 49 mage. standard 700 skill cap, 100 per skill is max. Remember, Eval + Anat doesn NOT equal wrestling. Standard builds are old school tank - Mage, Resist, Med, Eval, Wrestle, Swords, Tact , and numerous variations. I gotta go to a meeting or else id get ya on your feet real quick :) Head on up to the "new" forum , we have more info there.

heheheh its ok bro :). Just screwing around with ya. Yeah I am REALLY new, but I plan on being here for a long time so you guys gotta DEAL WITH IT! You are correct btw, there was another bunch of Iron Ingots. Roughly 30K iron I believe. I dropped by the house to see how the new central A/C installation is going at my house and I was chatting with my wife. Once I get home I will run my guy over there to watch it. We had to shut everything down because its like 93+ degrees in the house and it could harm the PC's. If you want I can hold onto them and use them for making you guys armor when you need it. Or you can hold onto it and just give it to me when you want armor. Edit: Oh and the Tower I showed you last night Slayerik. It didn't have crap it in. 200 regs, few seeds, like 3 plants, 7,000 in gold (that was the best part), and few treasure maps. The rest was funiture and such. Really REALLY crappy IDOC considering the massive size of the Towers. That fell around 9:10am. Again, my wife rocked it!

About a year and half ago, I found Angel Island, which is ran by Adam Ant. Ant had some great ideas for options for reds back when I was playing in 98 and 99, and now he has built up a shard and got it going. It is pretty fun, I haven't played in a while, too busy doing other stuff to add another game to my plate. http://www.game-master.net/He has a great beginners guide and how to get the game going.

I would prefer not to have it unless its a necessity. My UO heyday was its first year, when all you needed were magery, resist, hiding, tactics, and whatever weapon skill(s). It was fun being able to screw around with the RP skills, and forensics was surprisingly useful for determining if and which PKs were around.

I checked out his shard before coming to Metro. Ultimately it was my 2nd choice after Metro. I like the raw madness of Metro.
