So as someone who never played UO the first time around, what would the learning curve be?
Simple if you understand how things work. Combat skills make you harder to hit; getting anatomy helps you do more damage with combat, etc etc. Hardest part for most is the graphics. Personally I feel the isometric look adds to immersion. 3D has so many limitations on current tech its not even funny. edit. Key is not get worked into the numbers. The game is not for the catass, by definition. Its sandbox. That means you get to know your neighbor, you enjoy selling your ways, you engage in blood vendettas, and you macro to your hearts content. Or something. I am having more fun then I have since my fun in EQ2.

Our deceit dungeon crawl....
What a fuckin riot. Hordes of skeletons and ghouls and other shit monsters taking us on, Cheddars polar bears droppin like flies but savin our asses...Slay getting clutch with it, healing Cheddar through certain death about 10 times then re-telling WoW priestliness. Poor Addy, server went down for server wars when he was in deceit, without a recall scroll or rune to get home...best of luck buddy!
Got absolute zero loot, but earned our way to a nice deceit safe spot where we can continue our trek from next time. Fuck rune libraries...its fun as hell earning it! Must say tonight was about 10x more fun than any WoW raid i was a part of...
Earlier in the night, I had to train a white wyrm into town as a grey (guards can be called on you and you will be killed) just so ole chedd didnt lose it (his taming was probably 10 points lower than what you need to handle a White wyrm, the baddest bad ass around...it wouldnt listen to any of his commands).
Must say im damn glad i been working magery hard, cause i always have some clutch spell to lay down in the face of hordes of baddies (hi Para field, teleport, and invis).
Seriously guys, if you dont play you ae missing out :)
Oh yeah, and server wars fuckin own. about 20 minutes of pure chaos in britian starting at midnight eastern, no guards just mad scraps. Honestly, im really surprised how re-hooked to this game i am.
Killed a thief that tried to jack me earlier in the night...he ended up giving me a house deed and 15k after i got to talkin with him for a while...so yes, we have a home! WOOT

Maybe taking out the 3rd D allowed them to concentrate on shit like fun :)

From one who didn't do old-school UO, heres my (overdue) impressions:
Its fun - the feeling of risk is a nice addition, the graphics don't really phase me as the gameplay is good - I've been having a blast with Slay and Cheddar kicking butt - and even when I can't be on and playing I can be macroing skills which is a big help. I think anyone who played back then and enjoyed it, or people (like me) who've heard you lot talk about the golden days of UO, should give it a try to see what the big deal was about.

So...are people still playing?
I never was a part of UO. I played on an emulated shard for about 2 weeks once, but the mechanics were really wonky. Anyone able to repost the links I would need to start playing with you guys (just wanna make sure I get the right ones).
Also, any particular "class" you guys need? I don't mind supporting roles.

www.metropolisshard.comhttp://www.metropolisshard.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=393There is also a download availible on MarkeeDragons site, the link eludes me at the moment. Whatever skills you wanna get are fine, but I highly recommend starting with something that will make you a bit of cash. Any type of crafter, bard, mage, etc will get you on the right path. Your first few days will be mostly macroing (unfortunetely); hook up with Slayer, he is pretty good at it. We do have a house now and are working on getting more funds!

Dare I even ask someone to explain macroing to someone who has never done it?
Yes, I dare to.
EDIT: Also, the primary download link found on the forum you posted is full. I'm using the Alt they posted. I hope it works. And what is with the robes?

http://www.markeedragon.com/downloadultimaonlinemondainslegacy.php <- Use this link, its hella fast. Next download Razor. Run UO, thereby installing it and getting all nice and patched up. Install Razor. Run razor, fill out the server info, and viola. You are in! All macroing means is you work on skills automatically; razor has easy to create macros (basically you record actions, hit "play", and you are macroing). I may not be on tonight due to having a meeting at 5 am. Ugh. But I should be on tomorrow evening.

Heh...I loaded it all up.
It plopped me down somewhere in some town, and that was it. I picked Mage at character creation, and managed to put the two spells I had into my spellbook.
Casting is....it takes too much clicking and stuff. Also, I didn't start with any offensive spells.
Map is ass. Took me awhile to wander my way out of town, and then mroe time to find something to smack. I couldn't equip my dagger, so I just closed it out.
Oh well.

Mainly using vent right now; I have been meaning to move over to the F13 TS. Life has been extremely busy for me though; time keeps flying! Type [msg in game to open up the unique chat client thingy; its very handy!

Just ask Addy, it helps SO much having a couple vets around. If you are willing to give it another shot i can give you the gameplay tutorial and macroing tips. UO automap is awesome by the way. the best download i have found if anyone is interested is from www.filefront.com , just search Ultima online and get the one that says UO gold, difital purchase. pulls at like 600kb/s

You have to unequip your spellbook to equip your dagger - just drag it into your backpack :) Really its very easy to get into with a little help - its not a directed experience like wow - its very much a sandbox world but there IS lots of fun stuff to do.

Hey guys! I'm registered now :). *NOTE:* To any of you guys that start out new on Metropolis be sure to hit up the newbie dungeon which is the portal right next to the building you start up at (that building is an Inn). The newbie dungeon is great for getting some cash and getting your skills going. UO does take some time to learn. Its not as much hand holding as the other games out there. DAoC, EQ2, Shadowbane, and WoW all have their "newbie" areas and such. In UO you start off in the middle of it all. Sure you are safe in town (somewhat, there's still thieves), but if you stray out of town and don't know where you are your likely to end up at the end of someone's Corp Por (this is a commonly used and bad ass spell in UO). BTW, for those of you who don't know much about me. I play a hardcore crafter in UO. I met Slayerik, Cheddar, and Andric in UO. I have been seeing them macroing in town near the bank and finally decided to be nice and say Hi. I am really glad I did because they introduced me to this website and last night we had our first "mini" adventure. My crafter is a GM (Grandmaster) in blacksmithing, bowyer, carpentry, tailoring, and soon to be in tinkering as well. My wife also plays and she is GM in inscription (well almost, she's at 99.1), tinkering, alchemy, mining, and I think something else. Not sure what else to post, but I know that I am having a blast and I look forward to our next expedition into hell where we can kick some ass and take names! ____________________________________________________ Edit: For "other" macroing programs besides Razor you can also try www.easyuo.com. Its a VERY POWERFUL tool. If you can learn the scripting language there is NOTHING this program can not do (well, it can't PvP for you). If you can do it, it can be scripted to do the same. The scripting language is a little confusing to me. If you have ever done any programming it should be fairly easy to pick up (so I hear). That website also has some already made scripts that work pretty well. They sometimes have to be tweaked to work and sometimes they just won't work at all because of different reasons (freeshard, different version, etc.).

I just might jump into this. Does it have ships, houses, and player vendors? How closely does it emulate the original OSI servers?

Yes, yes and yes. Pretty damn close to the old experience. Balance is pretty damn good and there are tons of little goodies (like a casino and a special Texas Hold Em game where the winner of large pots gets global recognition). Its fun!

Yep, that's oldschool UO. When it first came out in '97, you couldn't even kill hinds until after a few days of raising skills.

Yep, that's oldschool UO. When it first came out in '97, you couldn't even kill hinds until after a few days of raising skills. You have to start with rabbits, cats, and dogs. Make sure you remember to skin them too. I remember surviving those first weeks on the sales of the meat and hides to npc vendors. It was a cold harsh world.

I rolled a warrior and I couldn't even kill the mobs in the newb dungeon. That was enough for me. This isn't one of your fancy modern MMO games where you log in for the first time and some NPC is like "Hello Driizzt69, you are powerful and cool! Only you can save Newbington Village from the evil legions of a_sickly_bunny01!" This is old-school UO. Here's your dagger and your 100gp, you near-destitute and incompetent nobody of a newb, figure something out.

I also couldn't get past the interface...it's just not very intuitive to me. EQ didn't really hold your hand when you first rolled up (or atleast it did not when I started it).
EDIT: I mean, I really want to like it, and have fun playing it. I've seen it done before....I just feel so hamstrung trying to do anything besides basic movement. Hell, I even accidentally gave money away to a merchant, because I couldn't figure out how to pay him for a skill training.
Also, wtf is with the newb weapons doing Zero damage? Why even have a newb dungeon if you can't do any damage to anything in the newb dungeon?

Virtual Hobo Online sounds fun. Yeah, it wasn't unheard for those dumb newbs who thought they could just go out and be a warrior to end up picking through litter at the bank like bums. Me, I did a little research ahead of time and started as a lumberjack/bowyer. I didn't give a shit about crafting or archery or anything, it was just a simple way to turn wood into money by making bows and selling them to the NPC shop. So I was a poor newb, but never utterly destitute. I remember after about a week or so I had saved up and bought some shitty chainmail from an NPC shop (topped off with the obligatory "I'm a newb!" orc helm) and had started poking my nose out of town a little bit. This other newb is wearing platemail, and he thinks he's tough. He tries to PK me, not realizing that even though there are no buildings in sight, we're still in the guardzone. "Guards!" KA-THWACK! Blaarrgh! And now I have plate armor. And an exceptional GM-crafted katana, no less. I couldn't carry all of his stuff AND all of my stuff, so I threw my old shit on the ground. He came back to beg for his armor, and when it was clear I wasn't going to give it to him, he had to pick up mine and put it on or else go naked. Fucking newb.

Guard killing people in East Brit was all the craze. Usually it was thieves using them to grief players, though.
