Finally watched the vids.

That was some of the slowest and most boring combat I have seen in a long, long time.

Looked like that was deliberate. That's about as fast as somebody would swing a heavy melee weapon, though I understand that video game junkies hopped up on caffeine will find that tedious. Perhaps they could put a minigame in where you have to click the mouse thirty or forty times between each swing to keep you occupied.

I found the camera more annoying, but the character movement, and the graphics were visually appealing. Which is good. I never even tried the brown sludgefest that was DDO. Okay, I fiddled with it for a minute. Maybe 90 seconds tops.

The camera adds a thousand barrels. - Steven Colbert

For those of you that have sent me PMs, I will be making a list - in the order the names were received and submitting them. For those of you that responded that told me you are in the beta - if something magical and exciting (that's a bit of a stretch....) hasn't happened, send me another PM.

Turbine will never, ever learn.

I know at least two red name dudes read this board, SO TAKE THIS NEXT LINE TO HEART.

Never let anyone, ANYONE, play your game until you have 2 hours of solid, functional gameplay. I don't care if you call it Pre-Alpha Phase Negative 6.

First impressions really are everything.

Maybe I would too.

IF said "DDO esque gameplay" has a control scheme and/or decent interface to interact with it. A world would have made DDO more interesting, but a world still isn't that interesting if all you can do is trudge along in it like a cripple.

DDO's control scheme always struck me as middling.  Maybe it's because I played a rogue, but I never had a problem with it.  For some reason, though, the game made me feel compelled to roll everywhere.

I don't understand why Turbine, of all companies, should have trouble creating fluid avatar control.  AC1 is still the gold standard in that department - anyone who played AC as their first MMO usually has a really hard time finding the control other games give you over your avatar to be acceptable.  Charge-up jumping and giving everyone an uber runspeed should be commonplace in MMOs - if Turbine hasn't figured out by now how to rip off the best parts of their own previous work, perhaps they deserve a drubbing in the market. :/

pvp info is starting to come out of pax. looks like everyone gets a prerolled monster with a chance to get a better prerolled monster by completeing quests.

At the character selection screen, you can select "Monster Play". This lets you play as a monster, such as a goblin. This is not a persistent character--it is a pre-made goblin, already set up with equipment, skills, hotkeys, etc.

As a goblin, you will have monster quests. Some will involve killing good NPC's. Some will involve patrolling special PvP zones and killing players. Either way, player-controlled monsters will be restricted to certain areas. By completing your quests and/or killing good guys, you get points--let's call them "Monster Points" (MP's).

MP's can be used to buy long-lasting (but non-permanent) buffs for your good-folk character, or they can be used to buy a Monster Play session that will let you play something more powerful, like an Uruk-hai or troll. You are only paying for a single such session though--in order to continue playing as a bigger, badder monster, you will have to earn more MP's. Of course, the quests for bigger monsters will also yield MP's (perhaps enough to keep playing that monster).

I asked Nik if all playable monsters will be humanoid in shape, or whether there will be more exotic monsters (after all, we can play orcs and trolls in WoW  ). He said there are definitely more exotic choices, but he would not go into detail (he's so miserly!).

This, of course, is all from my hazy memory of listening to Nik in a very crowded and loud exhibition hall, so believe at your own risk!

One other thing: I believe I recall that Nik confirmed that there will be group monster missions. So you and your friends could form a merry band of spiderlings if you were so inclined.

I can agree that not being able to buff them a little with items/armor is a bit weak, but one of my biggest gripe is the repetitive and predictable AI in mobs. Can you imagine if you came up to a goblin camp and started your pulling only to notice that one of them didn't act in the typical predictable way? hung back and healed, or refused to be kited? Or how about 2 of them? Do you think it could turn the tide of the skirmish enough so that you (as a PC) always have that little thought in the back of your mind that some of the mobs in the game are not preprogrammed? Could it raise the danger quotient a little?

Not that I would want to spend full time playing a mob, but it could be entertaining...

It would be more fun if I could spawn as a low to mid level mob and then go rampaging anywhere. Surprising some n00bs and then getting chased all over hell's half acre by some higher level characters would make for some fun game play  evil

Like I said, my heart isn't broken. I have very little interest in this game to begin with.

But....I Don't mind the idea. Except the NPC quests. What's that all about? Who wants to play PvE quests with a non-persistant, non-upgradeable, virtually meaningless character, in secluded pvp zones?

Just make playable monsters the option for people who want a modest PvP diversion from the main game, and be done with it.
