This here is where I work.  Thankfuly, I'm just an office monkey, drawing-up plans and what-not for the production people to use.  When we started hearing reports of Site Supervisors and their assistants being picked-up at their homes this morning I had a chuckle.  Went to a co-workers house at noon to see what the brouha was about, and there wasn't any information given beyond it was an INS bust.

" Huh, no big deal," I thought.  We don't actually hire PEOPLE we hire Subcontractors.  They're the ones that put together the houses, and we make them sign an affadavit that says they have all the proper paperwork, etc. for all their workers.  Well, surprise, surprise, surprise.. go back to the office and there's TV cameras and the INS/ ICE there.  We're not allowed back into our offices until someone clears us, then when we /are/ allowed back in (because we're just Architecture, nothing to do with hiring/  Construction Management) they've turned off the server to make certain nobody's erasing files.

Fantastic.. yes, I can work productivly without a server or standards files or even design files to work from.  Hey boss, can we go home? Nobody can work without access to, y'know, drawings.  Response: No, go back to 'normal' and stop standing around.  Wtf? Seriously? Sit at work for 4 hours not doing anything?  Whee.

So 'round 3:00 the ICE guys come down and tell us we have to give our names and IDs, then get out as they're siezing files and we can't be there when they're doing that.  Again, whee, but at least I get to go home.  Boss rounds us up, tells us to speak with the nice gentlement, give them the info and DO NOT talk to the press.  We have a laugh, because of course nobody's dumb enough to do that. (Well, except the one person who did.  I don't expect she'll have a job in a week.)

Supposedly things are going to be A-ok to go in tomorrow.  I'm not holding my breath.  I figure they took the server, and once more we'll have nothing to work from. Won't that be fun..  8 hours of nothing.

So, again, how was your day?

I was sick all day, can barely speak, and had to get up early to go set up my next (and hopefully final) semester of college.

I have work tomorrow. Fuck them, I'm not going.

Trying to track down a very serious error for the better part of the day.  An error that's producing no errors in the error log but is completely destroying the file output from a build process I run.  Trying to trace back what might have caused it, trying undo whatever might have caused it, then having to wait 20 minutes  or 80 minutes to check the result of the build.  Haven't found it yet!

Ohh, and my wife has the stomach flu.  If I get it, I shall not be happy.  Because well.. I'll be puking.

I think I need to go to a driving range and hit some 7 iron shots (zen stress relief, the 7 iron is the perfect club) or go hit serves for a while at the club.  Times like this I wish I had pre-Trammel UO to go on a kill crazy rampage.. perhaps GTA:SA will have to do.

Edit: Figured out the error.  A setting that should not affect the output of the file at all was causing all of the problems.  The setting is used nowhere in the file.  Angry note to developers being drafted.

Merusk, maybe you can bring in a WoW/FFXI/(long-grindy-online-game-here) install disc?

I found out I may have to reverse engineer a switch, with live traffic, tomorrow.

Last night I ran my fiancee's car into a curb which busted the tire out and we had to replace all her tires.  Today, I deleted my 'random' folder on my desktop -- where I keep all the impromptu files we make for our finances and the such.

Needless to say, I am in the dog house.

I had good BBQ at an interesting little hole-in-the-wall.

For the past two days I have been getting a badly out of date PAC web site in order.  Next up is switching it to shtml so it isn't necessary to update 50 pages to alter something insignificant.  (I much prefer using a simple text editor over commercial packages that screw with my streamlined code.  Grrrr.  Kill.  Plus the server interface is clunky.)  I've made a lot of people very happy and they're making sure to let me know, so I'm in a good mood.

Thanks for asking.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

It's gotta be there unless you overwrote it with other data in which case you are screwed.

Edit: if it's a Microsoft file, poke around and see if there's any tmp files lying around. You might be able to extract some older data from one of those.

If I could actually explain all the things that have happened these last two weeks in MY job, I would definitely win this one.  But if I gave details, I would have to HUNT DOWN AND KILL YOU ALL.

Ahem.

Though to be fair, the true roots of this insanity did start back around November or so.

Let's just say I work in a different office now, which is much better for me.  As long as no additional paperwork is generated from this last fiasco, I should be able to survive the next 264 days with little to no difficulties.  Or even required thought.

My new job is much less bullshit-intensive.  I really hated sitting around in an office for no better reason than something MIGHT happen later.  If it happens, FUCKING CALL ME!  I live 20 minutes away WALKING for God's sake!

So I have more free time on my hands these days.  Y'all need to start finding shit for me to do.  And by shit I mean beta.  Or new game suggestions.

My new boyfriend (I'm evil, he's 17...but that's at least 18 in Korean years, so it's still ok, right?) has a definite love of Final Fantasy X on the PS2.  Recommendations in that general field that don't use too much crazy English would also be appreciated.  If you don't know what I mean by crazy English, I can't explain it to you.  If you do know, you've either lived over here, or are Schild.

Anyway, I'm currently playing a little WOW (trying to train up the SO in it), a little Toontown Online (ok, a lot here lately...it's great for just jumping in for a few minutes), and even a little EQ2...just cause it's kinda perty and to reward them for finally fixing the clusterfuck that was launch status.  The last few days, however, have been dedicated to the most beautiful game EVER, Oblivion.

If one were to consider playing around with website construction, what software would you recommend he have his SO download from the deliciously evil Korean pirate servers?

Anyway, thank the darkness that there was a thread already here for me to throw my little update into.  Creating "I am back but I doubt if any of you missed me" threads is so sad.  Of course, semi-hijacking ain't so great either.

Meh.

My days have just been getting worse and worse.

This morning, however, I am taking the morning off for my wifes second ante-natal appointment.  I'm hoping to hear wee zeb gurgle later today.

I'm on vacation, well, kinda a forced vacation, see last week I had 2 ulcers rip open and lost a ton of blood.  I ended up in the hospital for 5 days, got 5 units of blood, scoped up both ends and found that I had 2 ulcers--1 cm and 1.5 cm with signs of bleeding.   Luckily it has stopped and I feel great now, but work told me I am off till May 28.  I can't blame them, it was too many work nights, too many caffeine drinks, too much motrin when I was aching from working out and work.   Plus I'm a single parent and have my kid with me full time.

Been fishing, playing video games, hiking, and goofing off, feel great now, but when the blood came out my ass and I about passed out when it happened it sucked.  I have a new found sympathy for GI bleeders, as I had no pain, didn't think much other than I was tired and worn out.  Doing good now, just having to do the life style change, no caffeine, no carbonation, no alcohol, no NSAIDS.  I'm back up to a regular diet, but still taking it easy with lots of water and decent food and exercise.

Really.   I peek in his windows all the time.  There's always something going on at the Strazos family trailer.

I got free coffee (er, chai) from a sales rep this morning because I sat on the phone for over an hour helping one of her clients out with freakin' Javascript browser compatibility issue on a website *they* wrote. So I guess a not-so-great day yesterday sometimes gives you a better day the next day. Of course, I do crap like this all the time and usually never even get a thank you..

The moved the baseball game I was excited about going to today to tomorrow, when I'm scheduled to work. So, I basically took a day off for nothing. "Potential inclement weather?" What the hell is that? It better rain like Biblical times now or else the people who called off the game a day in advance are total jacktards.

Also, "jacktards" is not in the spellchecker.

I can tell you right now do not expect that server back in less than 6 months time. A place I used to work had one machine confiscated for 6 months because of some civil suit bullshit, claiming the machine was used in a hacking attempt (it wasn't). And this was seized by sheriffs, not Homeland Security, in the days before 9/11 and ULTRACRAZYQUILTPLAIDBLACKWATCH terror alerts. If that shit had happened today, I'd never expect to see that server again.

I hope Homeland Security absolutely assfucks the subcontractors who were hiring illegals knowingly, not just because of the whole illegal immigrant thing, but because of the people who aren't even involved (like you and your department) catching blowback.

Well, it seems like they're actually getting tech-savvy these days.  They came in and made a direct mirror of our drive rather than siezingthe hardware itself.   Of course, they underestimated the size of the drive, so they were here from Noon until 6:15 the next morning, but at least I could work when I got in.   Part of it is probably that the company is cooperating fully.  They said if we hadden't we were probably looking at a 4-day lockdown while they searched themselves.

Course, last night I got a call from Mom that Dad's in the hospital with an irregular heartbeat.  I'm wondering what black cat's path I crossed last week.
