Another Korean developed MMOG coming to NA: Space Cowboy Online

There's a gameplay movie in the Movie section and it looks like one those behind the plane shooters like After Burner that used to be so popular in the arcades. There's also an interview on Joystiq with the producer Jason Park. Oh and Dream Pod 9, the makers of Heavy Gear, called -- they want their "Gear" trademark back.

Edit: added Heavy Gear reference

You know, one of these days Korea is going to make an actual FUN MMORPG because at the very least, they're trying everything. And when that day comes, most of us won't give a shit about the grind. Just putting that out there.

I hope they're trying to create a new vernacular.

Like MMOGs worth playing.

I might play if I could reserve the names Steve Miller and Joker. Or maybe Midnight Toker.

You would probably get farther if you licked your eyebrows instead of waggling them.

I finally got around to installing and trying SCO out. It's actually kinda fun and I didn't hate it or want to stab my eyes out. I chose the I-Gear (I think) that's air-to air combat based. I had to invert the mouse Y axis before I could get the hang of things. I'm one of those weirdos that has to set my controls as if it's a flight sim (which in this case it sort've is). Even MMO's. I guess I played too much Red Baron back in the day.

Reasonably fun and I don't feel the need to uninstall.

I was drinking when I wrote this, so sue me if it goes astray.

The combat feels like an arcade shooter to me. It's not bad as far as it goes, and at least the AI isn't completely stupid. Has the makings of a fun divewrsion.

The ability to dismount your Gear and run around town though feels like a complete hack, even worse than the AA towns were initially. It's like they used up all of their design and aesthetic sense and resources developing the adventure zones, leaving the "towns" to some intern they hired for half a day. Who was only allowed to use the UT editor. The old one. It amazes me that in the adventure zones they can get scores of different craft flying around seamlessly where they can't get scores of avatars to do the same in town even though there are only like 9 avatar models at all and no customization allowed.

Worth checking out when it's free. I can see this capturing maybe one or two folks here on a masochistic binge. Otherwise it's just an example of how commonplace MMOGs are now. Literally anyone can make them now, and SCO is one to use as proof.

It looks like someone took Descent, then anime'd it, then decided to steal some of the worst aspects of AA for good measure.

Yes.

The only thing I disagree with on the Descent reference is that Descent had more complexity than combat in this game.

As soon as I manage to get level'd up enough to find decent PvP (which I imagine is the crux of this game, given how dumb/cheaty the PvE mobs are), I'll write a review if no one else does.

My first impressions are that this game is remarkably similar in concept and execution to Auto Assault, only with
1) three dimensions
2) no destructible objects
3) Dumber mobs
4) smaller zones

You forgot
5) free.
and it actually requires you to target stuff, instead of just pressing TAB till it fall out form your keyboard.

'Free' only matters if it doesn't suck.

As for the targeting stuff, that's part of the problem.  Stuff in front of me that I shoot with my 'Lancerjob'  (Engrish 4tw!) should generally be expected to be struck by said lazer-bullets, regardless of whether or not I pressed the shift key first.
