The rest of you have no excuse. I had better see some fucking posts about this game once it comes out. BUY IT. PLAY IT. LOVE IT.

This will be the third copy I will have picked up and I'll play it through again. I can probably finish it in 5-6 hours now though. :)

I plan on getting this assuming it doesn't have StarForce and it has normal mouse look aiming. I tried it on the GC but I just can't play shooters with thumbsticks.

CompUSA has the shipdate as 5/24/06. I'll adjust the topic if so and bump when necessary. Gamestop will be getting a call in the morning since it's not on the website but probably in the computer.

Edit: Ok, depressing, UBISoft has it listed as May. On the bright side, it won't have Starforce.

This will be the first SP-only game I have bought since shit I dont even know if I've ever bought a PC SP-only game.

There was only one thing I didn't like in the small amount I played, the giant boss fight was hard.  But with a mouse and the ability to bind keys for fast weapon switching I expect to be able to trounce some zombies at the highest difficulty they have (I always play survival horror on high difficulties it is just so much more nerve racking, which is the fun of the genre ya know).

The nerve-wracking part is Leon's slow ass, being unable to move while shooting, and the difficulty aiming.  I am not an advocate of console FPS, but RE4 isn't really a FPS in my mind.  If it is, it is the only one to "get it right".  Aiming with an analog thumbstick is hard but I completed all shooting galleries using the Wavebird, so it's definitely doable.  Mouse-aim would make it far too easy, if you ask me.

Yes but if you are playing on the hard difficulties ammo consumption is your number one risk factor.  Therefore missing the headshot because your aiming with a fucking dualshock instead of a mouse versus those plant-head guys is unacceptable and will cost you down the road.

Missing shots even with plenty of ammo can cost you your life, but yes, running out of ammo would make things harder.  A low hit-rate is not an option in either case.  The number one tip I give anyone that is having a hard time with RE4 is: never miss your target.  To me, the big thrill and challenge in RE4 is staying cool and lining up your shot as the creeps close in.  It's not a run-and-gun game.  If the aiming is made easier, that tension is gone, as is the need to be so stingy with ammo.

I think the difference in our positions is that I don't blame the controller for my misses.

Anyway, someone who has played the previous version(s) let me know how the PC version plays.

I guess a tester was able to beat it in two hours with a mouse.

Slip slidin' away...

Slipped from 4/2 to 5/15. Word from the asian and euro releases is it shipped with poor lighting and no shaders and quality is sub-par, but a patch is incoming and capcom hopes to have it finished in time to incorporate it into the US release. With all the slippage, I say wait and ship it right. What's another month or two after all this?

Review of this in this months PC Zone.  They fucking panned it.  It's the 'worst port from a console ever'.

If, like me, you've played on the PS2 (or any other console) you've to avoid it like the fucking plague.

It's horrendous.  With a horrendous key layout that you can't change.  Apparently it makes the whole 'press now to jump away from the rolling boulder' bits totally unplayable.

Oh dear.

Well, I'll hold out hope for a decent patch for the US version before I hunt down a used Cube copy. And I really hope one can map it to a gamepad.

Doesn't let you use a mouse to aim.

Skip.

Don't need a mouse if you can map to a gamepad. If you can't remap or use a mouse...that's stuptarded and I'd actually skip it, but I don't see how it would possibly be playable in that manner, how would one aim?

I'm just being hopeful because I really, really don't want to play in 480i. In fact, I'll miss out on this one if they don't get their shit together.

You HAVE to map it to a gamepad basically.

Well, that's fine imo, as long as they straighten out the image quality issues. I'm getting the pc version strictly for graphical reasons. While I don't like gamepad fps, it's apples to apples since I'd need a gamepad for the console versions anyway. And honestly, for $20, even the graphical issues aren't a huge deal.

I seem to recall that RE4 had prog-scan support in its Cube incarnation, so you would only get 480i if you have a gimped Cube or no PS2.

Edit: RE4 is not a FPS.

I never bought the cable. I was pretty much done with the cube by the end of 2003. Had it hooked up to a CRT in my bedroom for a while a couple years ago, but I gave that tv away last year. I should probably get rid of my cube now. It was totally worth it for RE remake and Zero, Eternal Darkness and Zelda WW, but otherwise limited.

I really am a pc gamer, I tried branching out 'last-gen' and it just didn't work out for me.

You should just pass on RE4, then, if you ask me.  I enjoyed it, but this PC port sounds awful.

I was going to get this if it had mouse aiming but since it doesn't it wouldn't be any better than my struggling to play it on my GC so Capcom blew a chance to get another sale from me.

God damn the Japanese.  Those fuckers have the least-capable PC programmers on the planet; I have yet to hear of one single PC port of a Japanese console game that wasn't full of bugs or crippled by a shitty UI, and had no support whatsoever.  Yeah, I'm looking at you, FFXI.

Ah well, at least the Wii RE4 lets you aim with the remote; I'll settle for that as the best control scheme available for the game.

Wavebird is still better. It's just not that twitchy a game, you're very rarely overwhelmed. I fear RE5 though, that shit looks crazy.

I express disbelief at your assertion that analog sticks provide a better aiming method than pointing at the screen, do you have anything to back that up?  And I agree about RE5, I have no clue how you're supposed to deal with a dozen zombies at once if they're using the same sort of controls that 4 had.

Yea, I've played both long enough to know that not only am I better with a controller, but the Wiimote sucks at shooty things. Guncon is going to smoooooooooooooooooke it. Now, real fast, this isn't a PS3 vs Wii thing. If the guncon came out on the Wii or 360, I'd still favor it. The wiimote just doesn't cut it. That goddamn reticle is too big and meh.
