The president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, George Fornay, is talking price when it comes to the PlayStation 3. In a radio show with France's Europe 1, Fornay said that the PlayStation 3 will sell for between €499 and €599. Fornay acknowledged that the price may seem steep, but he emphasized that that price should be seen as inexpensive when one considers that the console will also play Blu-ray movies. Fornay also confirmed that Sony would be going for a simultaneous launch of the console in November of this year.

Strict currency translation suggests that American pricing may be in the range of US $605 to $726, but currency exchange alone can't tell the story. Case in point: the Xbox 360. In the United States, the Xbox 360 retails for $399, which is only €320 in exchange. Yet the Xbox 360 is priced at €399 throughout most of Europe.

If the PlayStation 3 follows the Xbox 360, the console may arrive in North America for US $499 to $599. This would easily make the PS3 the most expensive console on the market, with Microsoft's two next-gen systems coming in at $399 and $299. To round out the scene, recall that Nintendo is looking to launch the Revolution for less than $300.

With the Xbox 360 priced at $399 and a potential PS3 pricing of at least $499, the days of multi-console ownership may be coming to an end for many gamers. Or, perhaps not. Mario and friends may not be everyone's first choice when it comes to this next round of console action, but with most observers expecting inexpensive games on top of a fairly priced console, Nintendo may reap dividends for its strategy.  - From Ars Technica

I think everyone should go buy an original Neo Geo in protest. Jesus, blu-ray just isn't worth that much.

If the PS3 is priced higher than $400, I will likely NEVER own the system, and will make it a personal crusade to dissuade anyone from ever owning one. That's TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. Fuck any other idea on the subject, the whole idea of consoles as game machines is that they are easier and less expensive than PC's. When they start approaching PC territory in price, that's stupid. STUPID. STUPID. STUPID.

...

It looks like I'm going to spend the next console generation with only a Nintendo laser pointer power glove thingy.

This is the sort of thing that only an executive could say with a straight face.  A Sony executive.

 Nintendo Controller 4life, yo.

Any executive would say that with a straight face. No reason to knock Sony for it. And it worked with the PS2 - in a big way.

Remind me about the PS2 movie thing?  True it was my first DVD player but I thought I was an outlier.

You'd be wrong. The PS2 really helped DVDs take off.

Edit: Whenever Sony supports an exisiting media, it takes off like fire, but when they just make shit up for the sake of making shit up (i.e. UMDs), it fails. Also, porn.

DVD came out over VHS because the medium offers something that tape doesn't; random access.  Helps that it's more compact, and similar to another existing medium (CDs).  Blu-Ray offers ... what?  Denser storage?  Meh.  So you can fit a whole series on one disk, instead of having a boxed set, or something.  Not really worth the estimated $500 premium.

Unless you spent a fortune on your new shiny HDTV setup in which case $500 is a small price to pay to actually watch movies when you want to in HD (that is after you sign your soul away to the movie companies).

...which offers very little, for a large price tag.  I'm not saying it won't become standard, but it's going to take much longer due to both price point and general lack of features.

OK, well that all makes sense now.  Personally I beat that laserdisc player well past rigor mortis due to not having a huge income.  Twister and The Usual Suspects were awesome on LD.  I even bought a special version of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Also, porn.

Ah, shit, how could I have forgotten?  No more BluRay bashing for me... unless it does start to suck.

Hehehehe.... suck.

Just like how Sony made the UMD a force in entertainment. Oh wait, nevermind.

Honestly, I never thought I'd see the day when Nintendo would be in a position to once again take the lead in the console market.

If they still want to charge me $70 per season for the TV show, they can stick their show up their Blu-Ray.

But it'll have bonus features and never-before-seen cast interviews.

Which I never watch. Having 11 GB per disc just means they have more space to fill up with shit I rarely watch or care about.

But I'm sure M. Night Shamalamadingdong will be able to fill up 3 Blu-Ray discs with his next feature film's extras, appropriately titled "WHAT A TWIST!"
