Some of you might have seen that brief video a few months ago supposedly from DICE that had a mech stomping around. Well it turns out that was real, they are making another Battlefield game this time set in the future:

This is a from the May 2006 issue of PC Gamer.

This will be interesting.  BF1942 was fun.  A big whole bag of fun.  Desert Combat and BF2 were less fun.  No idea why - but I just plain didn't enjoy em as much.  (Maybe coz it became more tank wars?  Dunno).  Be very interesting to see if this is fun as well, or if its just BF2 with a different skin (from EA?  Surely not!).  The very short video only shows it as BF2 with little mechs - not much to tell from there.

There's a stealth/cloaking class that's new (assuming it doesn't get nerfed into oblivion before release) and some sort of Tau-ish looking floating gun platform (pet for Engineer class?).

That video looked like BF2 with new skins. Holy uninteresting. Seriously, for a world where everyone is fighting to survive the cities looked like they were in pretty good shape. Some war. Bunch of futuristic pansies.

I loved both 1942 and 2, but this gives me a giant case of meh. It sounds too goofy and gimmicky.

I'd really think this would lend itself better to a MMOG fee type game with being able to change your loadout and such.

Well as long as they shove it out the door as soon as possible, before it's really finished and announce an expansion the day the base game ships I can't possibly see how it could be bad.  Heartbreak

It would be funny if it weren't so close to truth.

What I want out of next FPS is more RTS elements - give commander some resources, extra for kills/meat goals, and give him control over spawning mechanical units. If you feel really ambitious make building and defending special pads (i.e. factory or helipad) required for getting specific type of units.

Eternity is a very long time, especially towards the end.

Yes it is using the same engine as BF2. Here's the content-free press release in Swedish:

And here's a machine translation into English:

Never played Natural Selection... What I want out of next gen of FPS is more strategical elements, maybe even some base building. Rush the tower while dodging AWP whores gets old from FPS to FPS - time to let player build that tower, in a different spot every time.

Natural Selection and Savage are both hybrid FPS-RTS games. Battlezone (the updated one, not the original) also had an interesting base building interface built into a FPS game.

They use Steam. I refuse on principle to take part in anything Steam-related. They killed my favorite game CS and for that I could never forgive them, even that now they seem to fix most of the initial problems.

I understand why I don't buy EA products or Square Enix products, but you refuse to take part in anything Steam related? What's with the Steamhate? Why is there Steamhate? Is the footprint for it too big? I've found Steam to be nothing but the easiest game delivery program in existance.

I don't know what sinij's reasons are but to me Steam is fucking bloated piece of crap DRM spyware. Until they change it so you can play single player games without needing Steam running I'm not buying or playing anything that uses Steam (you can search on my username and "Steam" for details).

Yea, it's bloated. Like I said, footprint. But DRM spyware? Spyware?! Wha? Howso? It's just an (unfortunately heavy) resource hog that turns out to be a unified platform for a good selection of games. I fail to see the problem. I could search it out, but I'd rather get the 1-2 paragraph summary.

I consider it spyware cause they require you to connect to Steam to play single player games. Why is that necessary other than to track your game playing habits? Multiplayer: fine, I can begrudgingly accept the tracking since they are providing a match making service but not if I just want to play by myself.

Wasn't it recently announced that you didn't actually have to connect to Steam to play the single player games anymore? I could check on this laptop, but it's sleep time now.

Real quick though, I don't mind connecting to Steam. I like that insanely datamined report that shows up every so often.

According to the support page it has not changed and I don't have Steam installed (obviously) to check it. Note that the FAQ implies that you can play without connecting through Steam but it's fucking bullshit. You have to *physically* disconnect your machine from the Internet for the offline mode to work. If you are connected to the Internet and Steam is not running and you try to run in single-player mode it will not work. It also doesn't work if you don't explicitly switch it into "offline" mode before hand which requries you to connect to Steam first. In other words if you make the mistake of disconnecting your laptop and trying to play the game without first having gone through the offline setup you are still screwed.

I haven't bought Half life 2 for the same reasons that Trippy has given.  Steam is an ugly piece of junk rife with problems and I have heard far more bad than good about it.

When Steam came out first it was very slow and would not allow to play games offline. Since I liked CS and they SHUT DOWN main matchmaking service I went and suffered through its buggy release pains. At one point I had to restore my system from backup when Steam botched something, thankfuly I had backups. What made me leave CS and swear to never touch Steam/Valve products when they banned my account for using no-cd patch. Fags.

Yeah, it pretty much sucked. I ended up buying it like 2 weeks before 2 came out (I didn't realize 2 was imminent). Played it for a few days, then went back to 1942.

No CD patches are pretty damn good at fucking things up. I can't say I wouldn't have banned you. When I was at BHG we had to issue a patch because of NoCD thing fucking up multiplayer.

You're being obtuse.

If you don't have a CD for it, the version of CS you have is likely the free mod version of Half-Life (if it's not the Steam version, and it obviously wasn't).

This makes the CD for it the HL1 CD. if there were no CD at all, you wouldn't have had a No-CD .exe applied..
