I checked this game out when it was in testing using the Mac OS X client on a Powerbook G4 (1.67 GHz 1 GB RAM ATi Radeon Mobility 9700 128 MB VRAM) and I remember that the framerate was near unplayable and the graphics were lousy and really it smacked of EQ1 in a lot of ways. There were quests to be had, but you had to run around and talk to everyone to find them. Seems to be standard start off killing rats fantasy MMOG fare, but what the hell, perhaps they've made some major improvements in a year (I should hope so, but with a dev team of 2... eh). I'm downloading the free Mac client to see how things are now. It looks like they have a purchasable version as well.

I went from zero spam to one or two a week as some point after the Dofus release, about the time I got wind it was free to play.  If I had used my spambucket public address (yegolev@speedfactory.net) I would not have noticed at all.  It certainly could be just a coincidence, but I smell fish.

Since I brought this up, I actually think this could be a fine way to finance a game since I am only vaguely aware of the spam I get on any account, thanks to reliable sorting programs and ISP filters.  It's like in-game advertising that I don't actually have to look at.  I don't care for the sneakiness, but if it was indicated right off then I'd be OK with it.  Of course, everyone would use a disposable address and the scheme would fall apart, but it is interesting to think about.

So while it is still downloading, I will add that the premium version of the game allows for more character slots, multi-classing (secondary and tertiary classes that is) and opens up all skills, spells and equipment to you (whereas the free version does not). It also allow you to run your own server and thereby your own world which is pretty nifty. I had forgot about that feature, but never tried it because the game was near unplayable when in testing before (which is what testing is all about I realize, I just lacked the time and patience at that given moment). The character you play in your free version can be transferred to the premum version server. No monthly fee to play. We shall see if it is improved in terms of playability and perhaps test out the server if I feel sufficiently impressed and want to blow 30 bucks.
