Blizzard announced yesterday a contest to win a slot in the beta test for our upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade.

You can win the slot in one of three possible ways:

    * be one of the first 1000 players to build a lvl50 char on test realm
    * be one of the 500 with the most honor gained on test realm with a lvl19 char
    * be one of the top 1000 able to grind as much lvl 25 chars as possible

God I love when they do this. It so works for their sort of games. That it excludes most people I know doesn't really bother me either... I'm so not as jaded as I should be ;)

I actually think it's a clever way to attract "prequalified" testers. Though catasses aren't the only type of tester you want testing your game you do need a large contingent of them so that they can burn through as much of the content as quickly as possible to find all the obvious bugs.

You don't need to lure catasses to "test" an expansion.  You'd need to lure casuals.  This is, therefore, simply meant to generate hype and nudge people into playing, perhaps to get at those people who canceled while waiting on the expansion.

According to Tigole

Quote
Currently, the test realms are testing new hardware. The whole point of the honor/leveling contest is to hammer concurrency on the test database servers. If testing goes well, the new hardware will start to get deployed this month. Once that happens, you should see a reduction in queues and database lag (i.e. trade lag, item creation lag, mail lag, loot lag).

This post makes me want to squeeze into my badass red jeans.

I can see testing hardware or concurrency.  Still, it's hard to separate Tigole from his legacy.

My comments on the whole deal:

"I just looked over the Burning Crusade expansion contest details at the official WoW site. If you want to get into the Beta test for the upcoming WoW expansion pack, you're going to have to put in some hardcore play sessions. We're talking some serious caffeine-fueled sleep deprivation experiments. Or you could just be realistic about the situation and see that a good portion of the contest slots are going to be won by professional gold-farmers/power-levelers. Who can work characters in shifts. The rest will be won by Uber Guilds, looking to get started on planning raid strategies and a sock change schedule.

If someone dies while doing this, and they end up winning a slot, does the immediate family get to eBay it to help pay for funeral costs?"

You might have also missed my play on words regarding his legacy, since he belonged to Legacy of Steel on The Nameless.

That's him without the last name.  For some reason I don't see a SS of it on the LoS site.

Looking at the names in those shots (like Tenaj) makes me want to chug Pepto Bismol again.

Very clever. I missed that the first time.  I had the honor of being in one of the lesser tier raiding guilds that Tigole and his merry bunch pissed on from time to time.

He won that title in one of those server wide, "Best of the Best" tourneys.  I wonder if he still had the EULA breaking last name at the moment.

Extra points if you can find a SS of him with the last name.  I'm not getting anywhere.  He probably catassed Google until he had looted all of the incriminating shots.

If you are having trouble trying using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Here's one of the LoS pages that has him referencing himself by his full name (search on "Bitties"):

I look at this as a blessing.  I mean, every unwashed catass scrub that is busy grinding for hours upon hours on the test server, is one less unwashed catass scrub who is lengtheing queues and sucking up available resources on my server.

Crap!

This actually makes a lot of sense.  If you want to make sure your testers are actually playing the game, find the biggest catasses you can get and have them play the game constantly.

Although, it does indicate that the new expansion is going to be something somewhat geared towards power playing...

We now return to your regularly scheduled foolishness, already in progress.

Not really - catasses will do what it takes to meet the criterea set out above, most will take advantage of any bugs that help them do so before reporting them, at least that has been my experience. Hardcore catass != good tester, playing alot is not the prime quality they should look for.

EDIT: Unless of course it's simply a marketing ploy to generate hype (the horror!). THen it's a good idea.

That PoS site won't even load for me. Oh well, I'm sure it sucks copious amounts of ass anyway.

Also, how much cock did "Tigole" have to slob in order to not get his name yanked? I had a buddy who renamed himself "Eamonn Douchebag" who was thereafter Forbidden from even taking a surname ever again in the game.

Since he's now a "big shot" at Blizzard, I'd guess "a lot".  Actually he was slobbing SOE knobs from Day 0, I think, but I didn't start EQ until probably a year after release so I can't really say.
