It's obviously not an M16/M4. It's a US Army solider if that helps.

M14.  The last true rifle in general military service in the US.

Frequently, it is used as an alternative for STA teams when they run out of the newer and more expensive toys.

Very solid weapon.

Probably the old sniper rifle called the the M-21 which was the old sniper rifle for the US Army.  It is a match grade M-14, meaning it was an M-14 that was made to be even more accurate.  It was replaced by the M-24 which is a bolt action, but of the same caliber (7.62mm).

The US Marines have allways had the better marksmen (yeah I know...I'm ex-Army/Air Force, and I'll catch flak from Big Gulp, Cheddar, and Grimwell) and have allways been trying to field better snipers and rifles.

Cool thanks guys. I knew we had enough military/ex-military people around to provide an answer.

The M-14 is extremely accurate, especially compared to the M-16 and most of its variants. My dad used one for his marksman test before he went to Vietnam, he said he wished he could've taken it with him since their M-16's were pieces of shit.

The early M16's left a lot to be desired especially in jungle fighting. That kind of gun in the picture is a very accurate weapon and a lot less unwieldy as some of the new uber sniper rifles. Probably somebody is packing it as anti sniper support where they don't expect to need the ability to shoot the engine block out of a car.

It's certainly a lot lighter and easier to use quickly than the Barrett.  What the guy is doing in the picture is something you can't do with a Barrett and is probably exactly why he is using it.

THAT is a sniper rifle.

THAT is an overpriced toy for rich gun nuts with teeny tiny penises.  The military uses it pretty much only for killing equipment and vehicles.  Professionals stick with sane rifles that don't weigh 75 pounds.

I don't think the Geneva Convention allows for shooting people with the Barret anyway.

I know nothing about guns but his grip on that seems weird. Is that how people generally hold rifles? His hands seem very close together.

He is just using the scope, if he wanted to fire he would need a better grip with the left hand (the .308 kicks alot).

I don't agree, the point of the left arm is to provide a stable firing platform so you want the left arm where it's going to get the most support from the wall he is leaning on, which is where it's at, supporting the rifle at near it's center of gravity which is where his left hand is.  You don't want to grip with the left hand, it should just be a pivot, gripping will throw off your natural point of aim (think of the rifle on a tripod, where it points is where it will hit, muscling it around will just screw you up.)  If you are properly relaxed when you fire and the weapon has proper support the rifle will return to its natural point of aim after you fire, the recoil won't be an issue.

I might suggest he tighten his stance up a little more and bring his left elbow down and put his shoulder on the wall (let the wall provide the support not your body) but otherwise looks ok to me for an offhand shot.

There is a lot more to consistent shooting than most people realize.

Shit. That's complicated. Can't he just move his mouse untill the cursor is at the head of the enemy than click the left button. Like normal people do.

As a matter of fact I swallowed one of these about two hours ago and the explanation is that it is, in fact, my hand.

The Barrett (and the M24) in BF2 is like the Scout in CS, it's not a one shot kill unless it's a headshot.

What size round does the Barrett fire? I reckon a good shot to an artery or joint would be practically fatal.

A quarter pound of lead travelling over 1 mile/second will turn a person inside out from the kinetic impact.  Urban legend has it that the shock wave from a near miss will remove limbs.  There is a reason that round is outlawed by the Geneva convention for use on people.

I've seen .50 caliber rounds go through a 8 foot thick packed earth berm no sweat.

Of course, outlawing it in the Geneva Convention is stupid, and I can guarantee that anyone manning a .50 isn't going to NOT shoot at personnel.  Dead is dead, and there's no good reason why grenades and Claymores are fair game and a large caliber round isn't.

Where does it say in the Geneva Convention that .50 caliber weapons can not be used against personnel? That's just one of those goofy urban legends as far as I can tell. Notice for example on this page:

Quote
UPDATE The US Army has officially adopted the M82A1 as their special purpose long range sniper rifle. Believe it or not, a bolt action won the trials but for reasons not entirely clear, the US Army decided to adopt the M82A1M (The M has a few modifications over the USMC M82A3). The official designation for the rifle is XM107 Long Range Sniper Rifle. The max effective ranges are listed as 1500 meters at materiel targets, and 1000 meters at personnel.
Emphasis mine.
