They have reached critical mass. Now word of mouth, mainstream media coverage and "my neighbor/colleague/friend also plays" comes into effect.

My boss at work just started playing WoW. He's practically the opposite of a hard-core gamer.

As a result, one of my coworkers just started last night.

Also, we have a finance guy in town from Bratislava, Slovakia, and it turns out he plays WoW with about 10 coworkers over there. Crazy times.

A good idea is a good idea forever.

The local morning show guy (Tucson/Reno) I listen to sometimes (when not listening to NPR) has started playing WoW.  His dwarf sidekick plays and has a lvl 60 in a raiding guild and the production guy does too.  The other sidekick/writer guy has just started playing also.  They started a guild and had like 40+ listeners join overnight.  That's not PA/PVP numbers, but not bad for the area.

It's getting a little odd.

Oh this is not odd, this is the beginning of the end...

When Blizzard hits 10million they are going to open the ninth gate or something and we're all going to die.  This will be right after they patch WoW to rip the souls out of all its players and sacrifice them to their dark lord, aka the lets boost Shaman Talents patch.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

Hey, I said it a while ago. This game is everywhere.

I hear people talking about it as I walk through the mall or down campus streets, elderly people at my place of work play it. Their kids play it. I've had conversations about mage talents with the 40-something guy that lives next door with his 3 kids. I've had complete strangers come into my conversations with my friends about it. It's like every 5th person on earth plays this fucking game.

And of course, some people still insist that it's just a fluke and no one needs to learn from Blizzard's lessons.

One of the guys in my guild is a radio host in seattle.  I will emphasize that he is not to mention the game on air.  Thank you for the warning.. :)

Ehh that sucks man.  What is the issue?  Lack of a guild to do end game content?  Or no interest in end game content?  Have you given end game content (pvp, pve, whatever) a shot?  Or do all the descriptions just sound so bad that you don't want to even try?

Any way you cut it, I think if you played the game up to 60 you probably got your money's worth, right?  I'm sorry that you are no longer interested, but I suggest if that's the case you go ahead and quit now and be done with it.  We all need to stop treating these games like spouses and skip the bitter divorce phase.  Remember how you used to play KoToR on the xbox*, but then eventually you beat it and you stopped, but you didn't have to go through all the tramatic end of relationship stress?  I highly recommend you do the same thing with WoW, it's just a game after all.

Jeebus...

Two guys I know that work for US Customs (CBP) play WoW now.  My 64 year old father asked me if I played it, and he's about the most computer illiterate person in the world (doesn't know how to turn one on).

Will it ever end?  World of StarCraft? (edit: MMORPG WoW reskinned)

Millions of people all over the world discover MMOGs for the first time, simultaneously.

A grave disturbance in the Force indeed.

Freak.

Yes I'm a freak for playing games until I'm done and then not vehemently hating them more than I hate even the worst of my ex-girlfriends when I quit.  The anal raping that schild took from WoW is just sad.. I'm sorry that it hurt you soooooo very badly..  though I guess getting a pally to 60 then seeing how worthless they are would be kinda heartbreaking.

It took surprisingly little to make you sound like a dimwitted casanova. I wasn't even referring to WoW. Like you said, any game could be inserted there. But it's cool that you took it personally.

I'm curious how much subs they'll hit with the expansion, when the people that canceled (ME) sub for a month or two to check it out.

As a matter of fact I swallowed one of these about two hours ago and the explanation is that it is, in fact, my hand.

There's only one explanation for taking my comments so personally, WoW's been cheating on you. Don't worry, you're just paranoid.

Without searching, I'm fairly sure we have a thread for every time WoW gets a million people. I can't say I feel bad about contributing to the death of this one.

The theory of ex-MMOG as "ex-girlfriend" has come up in this forum several times before. I'm pretty sure several of the newish posters (are they still here) were deeply involved with SWG in some kind of abusive relationship until recently. And the hardon you seem to have for WoW almost seems like the same thing, Schildy old boy, old bean, old buttercup.

I mean, I hated EQ2 when I played it (months ago) but I don't feel a need to constantly bash the game. I simply don't give a fuck about it since even though I've read that it's improved, it's also obviously just not for me...

That WoW gal, she musta done hurt that Schild boy real good.

I was pointing out the oppisite. I figured Cevik had been around long enough not to get pulled into an MMOG like that. At no point was it a WoW specific thing. It was merely about what he said. And I agree, it could have been any game. But, yea, words are hard.

I was saying DON'T[/i] get pulled in like that, ever, to any game.

I was also asking, for intellectual curiosity why he dinged 60 and then hadn't logged in again for 2 weeks.  It's kinda an interesting statement, I thought we were all about talking about game designs and what is bad and what is good about them.  Furiously is one of the more trustworthy members around here (i.e. he didn't come with the NGE RAPED MY WIFE hyperbole crowd that just arrived), so I was just asking what particular thing, and what his particular situation was, that caused him to no longer be interested so suddenly after he dinged 60..

I was just trying to further the conversation he already started.

I actually think Cevik's original post is one of the most clear-headed I've read in a while.

On a seemingly related note, I was trying to think of all the times I even look at forums for games I no longer play, much less post, much less bash. I couldn't think of any.  But hey, to each his own.

Witty banter not included.
