You have to sweep, when you are doing that you have to apply as much force as possible (depending on what you're trying to do), so there is a strength element. Other sports like darts don't make sense.

Being able to throw a rock with a great deal of speed accurately is a huge advantage in curling. If you can throw it harder, you can get more speed laterally when the rock comes off of another rock. This makes it possible to remove rocks that are at a much flatter angle to one another. Men have a physical advantage in this. Thats why you will often see more rocks in play and more draws in a women's game, as they are not as capable of throwing heavy weight takeouts. Also, as mentionned above, men tend to be able to get more out of the brushing.
In many bonspiels, and some tournaments, you will have mixed teams, but you'll never see men vs. women in anything competeive.
