The World's Worst Game: Curry or Covid

on: February 22, 2006, 07:22:28 AM

I started playing FFTA on a friend's unit, and became so addicted that I had to break down and buy one myself.

As such, I now have FFTA, WarioWare Touched!, and Advance Wars: Dual Strike.

Just fishing for what other games people have been playing on this platform.

As an aside, the people responsible for WarioWare Touched! should be given a damn medal - There's thinking "outside the box," then there's this game, which is outside the box and across the street. It's pure genius.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Advance Wars are pretty damn hot also.

Believe it or not, I've had trouble trying to play games at that place for hours on end. Hopefully I'll have a new job next week, and can get back to logging into EVE more.

I had a sepia-tone mental image of you trying to get your bullet in your gun before the perp runs off.

If I explain it, it won't be funny.

How did FFTA on a DS get you addicted to the DS? It's a GBA game and the new SP's have a better screen and you know the new DS Lite is going to have a better screen this summer. Meh, whatever, your logic has always been wonky as hell to me.

Beware Lost in Blue, it's eating my mind.  Five stars for obsessive brain bending fun.  My girlfriend is now similarly addicted to Animal Crossing and Electroplankton.  Oh, and let's not forget Nintendogs.  Awesome selection on the DS.

I have yet to buy Phoenix Wright and it seems no longer available.  Will try Ebay.  I have sometime Trauma Center and Trace Memory coming to me as well via Amazon.

I got the DS because my friend already had one, and I wanted to give myself the largest selection I could. And I don't care about the DS Lite because 1) it would involve waiting, and 2) the size of the current DS is fine for me - the new one looks too damn small. The current screen is fine for me.

Oh yeah, I saw AoE on the DS in the store. I laughed.

Yea, it's a turnbased strategy game. By not playing it you are missing out. I'm not sure what made you laugh though.

I laugh because it seems that every strategy game I have played that has been transplanted outside of its native PC environment has been utterly ass.

Though if they managed to actually make AoE DS a good game, that's nice.

So far its superior to AOE 2 which it is based off of.

But then again Turn Based beats real time.  And I always knew these games would be better done right.

Can I hope for Warhammer 40K Dawn of War DS turn based now?  Please?

Jain Zar, if you haven't done so, I suggest getting Battles: Prince of Persia as well. It's a different flavor of TBS but still quite good.

What the DS needs (and all consoles really) is a good civ type space/future sim.

Trauma Centre is awesome and very challenging later on in it. The benefits of working at an EB.

And I know there are places up here that rent portable games. Don't know if you have Rogers Video down there, but that's who rents them up here.

You should know better, silly Canadian.

Though if you can rent portables, I am jealous.

EDIT: Apparently, GameFly rents DS games. Link.

I still think Lost in Blue is fun, though EQ2 interrupted it for over a month and I can't sneak back into the bunker to steal the unifrom from the bad guys. :(

Animal Crossing is still fun too, in small doses. I take it out on my smoke breaks with me. Perfect 5-10 minute time-filler.

And Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is hell of fun.

The N-Gage is (was) getting some kind of Warhammer 40k game.

End of March.  Subtitled Glory in Death.  Play Marines, Eldar, Chaos, and Orks.  Turn based.
Im VERY aware of it.
Also for many cellphones in the UK they have Space Hulk available for said machines (not N Gage since a gaming cell phone shouldn't have cell phone games for some reasons)
which has turn based and real time modes.
I also have Civilization to get for Nokia's much mocked wonder machine as well.

Ive also started buying PSP games but not the system.  Generations of Chaos is basically Dragon Force (a Saturn game I splooge over) so I bought that sumbitch along with the Mega Man game builder game.  I needed to preorder Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence anyhow, so it was a multiple purchase thing.  Metal Gear Acid 2 and LOTR Tactics will be purchases as well.  Im waiting for a price drop for the system itself though.  The Capcom collection with Black Tiger and the new Ghouls & Ghosts game will be mine too.  Though it would really be nice if Sony would take their humilitation and utter ownage by Nintendo (especially in Japan) to heart and allow the US to get the PS1 game ports like Breath of Fire 3 which I dont wanna have to import from the UK, and to lower their price on their overpriced POS system so I can hurry up and make retarded Mega Man levels by at least the end of spring.

I still need Mario & Luigi for the DS, preferrably before New Super Mario Brothers shows up.  Didn't get Animal Crossing because grinding to make a pretty house is stupid.  Metroid Pinball seemed eh to me, Princess Peach is too Brokeback Mountain for me, and I already have 2 versions of Resident Evil 1 and don't need a third.  And Nintendogs while impressive technically, is something that doesn't fit my game style.  Im cautiously optimistic about Metroid Prime Hunters.  Since I didn't like Metroid Prime much anyhow.  (The GBA Metroids?  Lots of love.  Samus is meant to be controlled 2d dammit!)

Im mostly a whore for turn based strategy, and retrogame shit.  Thus I need 3 effing portables to get my game fix.  Rifts took me 4 months to complete, but Pathway to Glory Ikusa Islands was completed in a single weekend because I am awesome and it was short.  Its not quite warm enough to leave the N Gage in the car overnight at work and bring the DS inside, and I am not sure High Seize will be a long game.  Since its Advance Wars with Pirates.  ALMOST EXACTLY ADVANCE WARS.  Most of the units and abilities match perfectly.  Guess if you are gonna steal, steal from the best...

LOTR: Tactics is a little shitty.

Generations of Chaos is a brain game. More civ style building up and defense than tactics. Really, the tactics aren't tactics like most games. It's tough to explain. Review forthcoming.

MGA:2 will be worth it.

Mario and Luigi for the DS is super weak sauce.

If Sony started localizing more games for the PSP there's still a chance it could beat the DS. In the long run I still think it will. The system has too much goddamn potential and too little activity. But it's still within it's first year while the DS is 6 months from being 2 years old. That's a huge difference in system life (while the last 2 years of a system isn't so hugely different from eachother).

Right now? My game is Suikoden Tactics for the PS2. I'm loving the hell out of it. More than any of the Suikoden games at least.

Wow. I've known people to get quite protective of their Suikoden games, so this must be pretty good. I've never had the chance to play any of the other games in the series.

"blah blah blah, Suikoden kicks ass."

"Can I borrow it?"

"HAHA, fuck no. You'd have to kill me first."

People like the Suikoden RPGs because they're supposed to. Not because they're good. They're not. They are mediocre games. Suikoden 1 and 2 weren't bad. But the others, TRASH. I've no reason to believe Suikoden V will be any good. Tactics is something of a side project. It's good juju.

Suikoden 1 was meh.  Why people liked it over Vandal Hearts, another Konami RPG from the pre FF7 fucktard otaku invasion is beyond me.
And I was a dipshit today and broke down & grabbed the PSP.  Ive played it for about 90 minutes and there is ALREADY a scuff/scratch on the screen.
Playing at my computer table.  No dead pixels at least.

My first thoughts?  Impressive technically but my initial observations still hold true.  Its hardly a portable system at all.  Its a quasi portable via the Hard
Drive iPods, the first gen Game Boy, and both Sega Portables.  It doesn't want to be abused at all.  Tech wise its fancy as fuck, but it doesn't do everything
it SHOULD as a portable.

Which seems to be the fucking order of the day for portables.  Has there ever been a portable that was nearly perfect out of the box?
Gameboy sucked until the mini version with an active matrix screen, GBA was horrible in most light sources.  Neo Geo Pocket wasn't
color and had a within 12 month revamp, the Game Gear was too big and sucked batteries the way a French whore sucks.. well yeah,
The Nomad was even worse and went to porn star levels of power suckage, the Lynx was too big, the PSP I have mentioned, and the
original N Gage had the game cartridge flaws (remove the battery to insert a game?  WTF?), and the start button being a press key on
the D Pad.

The DS is the closest to a good bit of kit launched, and it is still a tad bulky, enough for a revamp in less than 18 months.  (Not 2 years.)
The PSP is longer, meaning its not gonna fit in my work pants most likely, outside of the few slacks I can find with DEEP pockets.
Given my observations on the system I doubt it will be a travel machine outside of things like waiting for car repairs, doctor's office
visits, and other things.  But I mostly bought it due to the software, not the hardware.

So far I have had a little time with Maverick Hunter X and LOTR Tactics.  Both are pretty decent so far.  I play LOTR minis so its nice
to have a game when I need my fix of Hobbit smashing.  And Maverick Hunter X reminds me of how badly my game skills have deteriorated.
It took me 2 or 3 tries to get through the first level.  Embarassing!

Am I a tool for buying the machine?  YES.
Will I have fun with some of the games?  Certainly.
Is it gonna be used as much as my DS or N Gage QD?  Doubtful.
