Teaching the world Google-fu one broken dream at a time.

I've been using this tool for a while now, and I'm finding more useful than the usual browser junk. Basically it's a community defined command line for the web. You can install an addon that makes it available as a "search engine" in Firefox. Select YubNub as the search, and type in "imdb fear and loathing" and it will run an IMDB search of "fear and loathing". Saves a click on a bookmark at least, more with a well constructed command. For example, "ampm porcupine tree" would search Amazon for popular music matching "porcupine tree", or "gm seattle" will open Google Maps at Seattle. Anybody can make their own commands, including stupid vanity ones, so for example "f13" will open the front page here and "ff13" will go to the forums.

I was hoping this thread was about Ewoks. I was sadly disappointed.

Firefox long since allowed you to make an alias to a link.  If I type in f13 hit enter and it takes me straight to the forums.

Hell, whatever version of FireFox I have does that automagically for some things (f13, school, etc - extremely frequently visted pages).

Yeah, thats actually a search where it just picks the strongest return.  There is a chance for it to misinterpret what you intended.  An alias is exact, no ambiguity.  What it sounds like this thing that Righ is talking about (I haven't looked at it yet) is a small amount of scripting with variable substitution, which should be handy.

Wow, plug-in that exactly copies Firefox built in unsnarled.

You can write dict moron and it'll take you to dictionary.com definition to moron.
You can type imdb <movie name> and it'll take you imdb search result for that movie.
You can easily define any number of such searches and shortcuts as bookmarks.

Moreover, if what you typed doesn't match any shortcuts and isn't an url, firefox will run google "I'm feeling lucky search" and take you to the result.
It's extremely useful.

I keep watching it and it never changes.  I'm not fooled, though.  The instant I blink, a contest will appear and I'll have missed it.  I won't give that damn box the satisfaction!
