Bill Would Allow Arrests For No Reason In Public Place

Mon Dec 19, 7:31 PM ET

A bill on Gov. Bob Taft's desk right now is drawing a lot of criticism, NewsChannel5 reported.

One state representative said it resembles Gestapo-style tactics of government, and there could be changes coming on the streets of Ohio's small towns and big cities.

The Ohio Patriot Act has made it to the Taft's desk, and with the stroke of a pen, it would most likely become the toughest terrorism bill in the country. The lengthy piece of legislation would let police arrest people in public places who will not give their names, address and birth dates, even if they are not doing anything wrong.

WEWS reported it would also pave the way for everyone entering critical transportation sites such as, train stations, airports and bus stations to show ID.

"It brings us frighteningly close to a show me your papers society," said Carrie Davis of the ACLU, which opposes the Ohio Patriot Act.

There are many others who oppose the bill as well.

"The variety of people who opposed to this is not just a group of the usual suspects. We have people far right to the left opposing the bill who think it is a bad idea," said Al McGinty, NewsChannel5?s terrorism expert.

McGinty said he isn't sure the law would do what it's intended to do.

"I think anything we do to enhance security and give power to protect the public to police officers is a good idea," he said. "It is a good law in the wrong direction."

Gov. Bob Taft will make the ultimate decision on whether to sign the bill.

WEWS was told that Taft is expected to sign the bill into law, but legal experts expect that it will be challenged in courts.

I'm sure next session the legislature will consider mandating flair.

Ohio has a lot of high priority targets for terrorists, they need to have much more powerful laws than New York or LA.  Everytime Osama Bin Laden gives one of his video speeches it's nothing but Ohio this and Ohio that.  They have to protect the Smucker's Jam factory at all costs, freedom be damned.

Our esteemed governor is a raging assmonkey.  All Democrats AND all Republicans (that aren't related to him) hate him with the unholy passion of a thousand suns.  If conservatism were heterosexuality, he'd be enough to turn you gay.

What Triforcer said.

It's sad when Ohio makes living in Northern Kentucky seem like a good idea for more than just property values.

I'm pretty sure this is just another way that Taft is giving a big "Fuck you Ohio" on his way out the door. Like Triforcer said EVERYONE hates the dude already and he has no shot at any sort of political future in Ohio.

You want bad... Not only do I live in a terrible state, I live in one of the worst parts (Cleveland.) Our soon to be Mayor won the last election on the sole basis that he wasn't Jane Campbell (the former mayor) who won the election on the sole basis that she wasn't Michael White (former mayor who should probably be in prison along with everyone else close to him).

Oh yeah, wonderful city.  Their river caught on fire, pollution was so bad.  Several times.  I don't think industrial China has had it so bad.

It can't just be the work of the governor, though.  It had to have passed the state legislature to make it to the governor's desk.  Sounds like Ohio has more problems than just one jackass.

Over and out.

Everyone loves to pick on Cleveland.

It's only because they haven't been to Cincinnati.

Yeah, the river caught on fire in Cleveland but Cleveland dumps most of its waste directly into lake erie, not the river. We like to blame Akron for that one...

QFT

I think I'm going to move to Columbus actually, the UC system is so fucked and I need a break from California.

What is hilarious is I'm related in some distant, distant way to Taft I'm sure.  Considering I am related to the president of the same name (who also sucked monkey balls I'm told).  Le sigh...

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

Well, there's a reason this would never happen in Georgia, and that's because every black person in the state would see exactly what the true purpose of such a bill would be: a reason to arrest them for letting the sun set on their heads.

Boy.
