Doughnuts In Trash Bin Led To Capture Of Escaped Inmate

POSTED: 7:04 am EST December 12, 2005
UPDATED: 11:45 am EST December 12, 2005

A "dangerous" Sumter County inmate who was captured this weekend in some Georgia woods after escaping from a broken down van last Monday will likely not be back in Central Florida Monday, according to Local 6 News.

There has been a delay with the extradition of Dominic Reddick, Local 6 News has learned.

U.S. Marshals caught Reddick, 22, late Friday night in Liberty County near Savannah, Ga.

Authorities in Florida and Georgia had been looking for Reddick since Monday, when he escaped after the van he was being transported in broke down. He was charged with trying to kill an Orlando police officer.

Surveillance video from a Georgia gas station located off Interstate 95 Thursday night showed Reddick entering the building.

Police said Reddick was then spotted trying to get some doughnuts from a trash bin in Georgia Friday.

"It was the scent of doughnuts that compelled Dominic Reddick to come out of hiding and go through a Dumpster at a Georgia gas station," Local 6 reporter Jessica Sanchez said.

A convenience store worker spotted him and called police.

"She happened to be an astute citizen who's been watching all the newscasts over the last couple days and did exactly what the partnership we have with the media does," a Georgia police officer said this weekend.

Reddick was found just 20 yards from the store late Friday night.

When Reddick was captured, officers described him as desperate, hungry and lost. He was starving and had pneumonia, according to the report.

Authorities also said he had not slept since he had been on the run.

Last week, Reddick was spotted several times near the Florida-Georgia border. Since he was considered dangerous, news of his arrest came as a relief for many communities.

"This community has probably lived in fear for the last two days," U.S. marshal Jennifer Armstrong said. "They can all sleep better tonight knowing he is off the street."

Reddick said he got the Georgia be paying a woman $1,000 for a ride to Savannah, but investigators said his brother had admitted to driving him to the area.
