Lesbian bikers get 'Dykes on Bikes' trademark

Fri Dec 9,12:56 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Lesbian motorcycle enthusiasts in San Francisco have won their fight to trademark the name "Dykes on Bikes," a lawyer for their group said on Thursday.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had denied applications by the San Francisco Women's Motorcycle Contingent to trademark "Dykes on Bikes," arguing the phrase would be perceived as disparaging to lesbians.

But the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Brooke Oliver Law Group said the word "dyke" is no longer viewed as derogatory.

"Within the lesbian community that term has been reclaimed as a very positive term that denotes strength and pride and empowerment," said Shannon Minter, a lawyer for the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

The San Francisco Women's Motorcycle Contingent sought the trademark after a woman in Wisconsin not affiliated with group attempted to use the phrase for a clothing line.

Bold mine. I wonder when "cocksucking jizzgobbler shitsweasel" will be reclaimed and be viewed as positive.

I've had a couple of lesbian friends over the years who were proud to call themselves dykes.  On the other hand, the spellchecker seems to be uncomfortable with it.  I can live with the trade.

My cousin and her girlfriend call themselves and each other dykes all the time.  I don't know if they're lesbians, though.  They don't look like lesbians.  They look more like guys.

Worse than just that, most lesbians look like schlubby looking guys.  I understand the appeal of vagina, truly I do.  I just don't see why you've got to dress like an overweight lumberjack with a bad haircut to love some taco.

There are no "pretty" lesbians. Pretty lesbians are just bisexuals....And actresses on the L Word. Or sometimes just bored and on temporay hiatus from men.

The reason why so many lesbians sport mullets and dress like lumberjacks is because that's what a lesbian is. The two can not be seperated. In their minds, they're not even female in any traditional sense.

The first group just cares about sexual pleasure, and second cares more about identity.

Hey! All I'm saying is show me a pretty lesbian and I'll show you someone who just likes sex "in the general sense" (i.e. bisexual). Someone who's simply in it for "sex", and not relationships in the sense that a lesbian would be.

Which pretty much illustrates my point:

If she was your "Ex" and shagged you at any one time, or even entertained the idea of shagging you, or has any inclination to have a romantic relationship with a man, then she is not a lesbian.

[edit] I would say the same of men. Just because a guy has had some sexual attraction or experience with other men doesn't necessarily make him a queer. There's far more going on with homosexual relationships besides "sex". Sex is not even the biggest part of it. I have enough respect for people to at least not reduce them to just that.....And yet, I'm the "bad guy" here.

[edit] [Yes, Shockeye, I'm on meth...This is yet another edit]

Another thing: I'm merely coming from the point of view that I've personally heard lesbians talk about themselves in relation to "pretty" lesbians ("Femmes", as they are called). That "butches" are the "true, real lesbians" and "femmes" are the dabblers, whose orientation and/or choices go either way.

Anyways...It's a complex issue and I wouldn't know what to say nor am I really qualified after all is said and done.

or her Sexual Identity was stil influx.
or she was giving hetro a try to appease social pressures.
or she was emotional attacted to him and was hoping the physical attraction would come later.

As you say, it's complex.

Maybe they don't have the variety of dykes in Texas that they have in Portland (the lesbian capital of the US, per capita), but my last roommate's girlfriend was a lifer (had never dated guys) and is absolutely gorgeous. She looks like a tall, petite fairy princess.

I guess I've never understood why a chick who loves women would go for a girl who looks like a dude, but whatevs. There's plenty I'm confused about.

Oh! Hey, I was asking Sauced about something similar awhile back. I was telling him how one time I saw a drag queen who I could tell is a hot guy irl, and I felt a little conflicted about thinking the drag queen is fuckable. And I asked him if he saw a drag king who he could tell was a hot chick irl, would he feel the same. What do you guys think?

We are guys.  Generally speaking, if there is some indication of femininity, if we don't want to hit it now, we will after a few more beers.  As long as our buddies don't find out.

Well, to be honest, it's this myth that I'm mainly attacking, and which lesbians do as well. Supposedly, it's not only misrepresenting lesbian culture, it's err.....mispresenting lesbian intimacy (hint: none of them have long fingernails). It's all nonsense meant to appeal to male fantasies.

Because it isn't just about how they relate to other women. I don't know a whole lot, but I do know that that is the most common misunderstanding right there. It's about how they see themselves first. Not their sexual preferences.

You're probably in luck. The majority of drag queens aren't even gay.

Eh....If a bet was possible, then I would bet that I've been laid more times with more women than anyone on this board (except Bruce perhaps...But he isn't here anymore, so whatever). I probably need the celibate, single life now more than ever.

What does this have to do with anything anyhow?

I have no e-peen (and I'm proud). I couldn't possibly compete here, so I would never even consider "waving it". What are you talking about now? He mentioned my sex life and I gave an answer. That's it.

My bad. I meant transvestites actually (yes, there's a difference)....Who, for the most part, are heterosexual men.
