Q: Did Fox just really cancel "Arrested Development"? Say it ain't so!

A: Well, technically, it's not so. Fox will air the first 13 episodes, but it decided last week not to pick up the "back nine," as they say in the business. That's different from being canceled. (There was some confusion earlier as to whether Fox had ever promised a full 22 episodes to "AD." It hadn't. The network waited to see if the ratings were good before committing to the back nine. The ratings were not good, settling in at roughly 4 million viewers compared with about 6 million, on average, the last season. Either year you measure it, not good.

Now, when a network cuts, or doesn't extend, your season order, that's usually a terrible sign. That's usually death. But remember, "AD" was cut from 22 to 18 last year and still returned.

Edit:  I'd just note that what Fox did is pretty sleezy.  They stoped airing the show because of MLB (and who won again?... exactly) and then decided not to show the last 9 episodes.  I think this is the same deathblow they did to "Firefly" and a few other worthy shows.  Fuggers.

All life begins with Nu and ends with Nu.  This is the truth!  This is my belief! At least for now...

Maybe they can release an Arrested Development movie in a while to moderate but profitable sales and noisy debates by many Internet nerds about how it compares to Monty Python (it doesn't, you fuckers, but you're going to debate it anyway).

It's happened before.

got both.  Commentary is priceless.  Listen to David Cross' rant on the last one about marketing.  Very prophetic.

I'm not surprised, just incredibly, incredibly disappointed.

Still, season 3 was kind of weak, I felt.  I didn't like the whole "For British Eyes Only" direction they were going, and it seemed to be getting a little bit more slapsticky.  But I'll always have seasons one and two to keep me warm at night.
