So after hearing nothing but good things about this game, I picked it up today as an arcadey something-to-do. I got through the first bit, and it seemed fun, nice graphical style with the cel-shading, and so I start wandering around, and bump into Johnny Storm's race. After 4 tries, I beat him. The city them opens up somewhat, yet every node of interest seems ot be some kind of race. Which sucks, because I didn't enjoy the Johnny Storm one, but thought ok get it done then do something fun.. I did another one and it was just chasing those big spider-balls around trying to get a good time so I can get a medal.. um.. great.

So.. are these endless city web-races a massive part of the game? I'd like to find out ASAP so I can take the game back without wasting hours on it..

Haven't taken the time to beat the game yet so I can't speak for the entire game, but quite a number of races are required to progress the story.

The race that will make you lose your will to live?  Electro.  It got so bad that I haven't touched the game in probably over two weeks, which is too bad because the rest of the game is quite good.  Hate the fucking races.

Thanks guys, looks like it's time to take the Spider back.. the little fighting I'd had was fun if simplistic, but the few races I'd had so far just sucked badly.

Might pick up one of the X-Men Legends games instead.. I never did play the first one.

There is some follow the leader type races, but as for the ones scattered around the world... it probably mandatory that you finish around 5 of them. Also, if you are having trouble with the johnny storm race (the first one) you will probably need to work on your techneque. If you press one of your buttons (i forget which one) it makes you turbo for a split second while swinging. So what you do, is shoot your web, then hit turbo right before the bottom arch of your swing, then hit jump. You will rocket forward, then as you start to decend, hit jump again for your double jump, and then your webbing again.

Maybe it was becasue I played so much of Spider-Man2, but I found the first set of races to be very easy. The first johnny storm race was really easy for me. Now, the second johnny storm race was REALLY hard. It took all my skills to beat him. Fortunetlly you dont have to beat his second race to enjoy or finish the game.

I would defenetly recomend playing around with the webswinging and ziping for a little bit before you take it back.

Ended up returning it, which turns out was a good move, since it's been heavily discounted all over the place here in the last few days, and I got my full-price back on it. Much Heart for EB's return policy that lets me buy/try games out and not smash things when they turn out to be not to my taste.

I might look at it again when it drops to the $20-25 price range of the other Spider-Man games. (Are either of them worth getting, by the way?)

So anyway, I picked up The Punisher for PC, for cheap. Shooting people in the face is much more cathartic, and what I need to be doing at the moment. I loved the Max Payne games, and while Punisher isn't as good as either of them IMO, it's still pretty decent.

Now to decide.. do I pick up Civ4 this week, or buy the new Black Templars battleforce box for Warhammer 40k? I'm leaning towards the toy soldiers, since I still have 3 weeks left of study this year, and with that in mind, Civ4 could be ...not useful. Also, I found a new copy of Gladius cheap from a shop in Sydney via eBay, so I'll have that in my hands shortly as well..

Spider-Man 2 ia a really fun game, but the webswinging in that game is much tougher than in Ultimate Spider-Man, so if you where having trouble in Ultimate, Spider-Man 2 would probably be a nightmare for you.

Thanks forthe heads-up there. It wasn't so much that the races were hard as much as they were un-fun, and I couldn't be arsed putting in the effort/time to get good at them. Maybe when I see it for $10, then  wink

I loved SM2.  But the Black Cat race no2 was hell and then the final "Rush to the Ocks Hideout before he guts MJ like a fish" race was an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE.  My wife had to dig the controller from out the wall after the 20th time.

Admittedly, part of that is having the right upgrades by that point.  You shouldn't even get to do the Mysterio bit unless you have the webzip.
