Ok, so I lied. I said I wouldn't do these single category things this week. But it's a big week and even though I can't really partake in all the fun, I figured everyone else would be. For the 10-15 of you on this board that actually play this gangster sim stuff and own a PSP, this thread is for you.

Recently, I've been tempted to put some episodes of Firefly on it and take it to the gym with me.  Not sure though.

Not sure that I'm going to buy this title.   I just bought X-Men Legends II for the PSP, which completely kicks ass, and I've already got GTA:SA for my Xbox.  Buying another GTA, especially one that doesn't bring anything new to the table outside of missions and setting, might not be worht it.

Anyhow, with at least 3 good RPG titles scheduled to release in early November, I'm not that desperate to add another PSP title. All can change, however, if this game gets absolutely stellar reviews.

My hate of the PSP game library is fading though.  Between Virtua Tennis and X-Men Legends 2, I'm really not too overly saddened to see my beloved emulators depart.

I got a psp for free and now that I've learned how emulation works on it, there's no chance in hell I'm upgrading past 1.5 to play new releases. (actually did the 1.52 -> 2.0 upgrade, then did downgraded it to 1.5. Now I can play tecmo bowl, Mutant League, and Blaster Master 2 so everything is a-ok.)

Driving controls feel floatier than the series norm.  Numerous loading screens can irritate quickly.  So far the voice-work is weaker than that in previous 3D entries.  If you played GTA3 then you better have really enjoyed the city layout because it is damn near identical.

It felt nice playing a game and not worrying about whether or not Starforce was giving my system genital warts.

An hour of wandering around the mall while my wife got her hair colored broke me down.  I bought this.  I could have bought 3 used titles for the price of this (Software Etc was doing a 3 for 2 deal), but I have too many games  I still haven't beat.  3 more would have put me over the edge into some sort of gaming induced fit.

Quick thoughts:

Controls seemed fine.
Voice acting and plot early on is bad. It gets better later.  The beginning feels like a rushed tutorial.
Motorcycle missions are very difficult. For me.
For some reason the combat is a little more difficult.  The controls in this respect aren't as responsive.
The loading is a lot less annoying in this game that other titles released recently (Virtua Tennis, X-Men Legends II).  The loads are generally quick and there's very little in action loading.
Music choices, except for the rap station, are generally uninspired. The chatter is funny, but this is the worst sound track they've come up with.
It's a trimmed down, PSP friendly GTA.   Very easy to just pick up and play.  There's also some other touches like different outfits to choose from.  I've only gone about less than a quarter through the game and I must have around 7 to choose from.

I would do a fully fleshed out review or maybe a combo mini review with Xmen Legends II, but I just get the feeling that no one here gives a shit about the PSP.

I think anyone who cares about GTA or the PSP or especially GTA on the PSP has already bought this. I think what we really need is a write-up about how games are progressing on the PSP. Are we seeing technically superior games for the PSP as time goes or etc, etc.

Hard to say.  It's pretty impressive they crammed the full GTA3 city into a portable, but then you also pay full-game price and $250+ for that system and game, so I do expect astounding leaps in scope.  I think the PSP's biggest hindrance is it's analog control, and sometimes it feels akward holding the PSP while playing games that use all the buttons.  Neo-Geo Pocket had such an awesome control setup with it's analog.

As far as I am concerned, though, Lumines is still the primary game for the PSP as a "game machine", which disappoints me in so many ways.

Lumines didn't really do it for me. I think I enjoyed Meteos on the DS a bit more. I'd enjoy Meteos even more if it was on my PC and I could use a mouse.
