I actually thought Dude, Where's my Car was the worst waste of celluloid ever when I saw it. I still have the same intensity of dislike for it but other movies have claimed that title. Harold and Kumar wasn't nearly that bad but it explains why I thought it was Less than Exceptional.

Rasix and I think the same things are funny. Yay! Bill Murray is a genius and is part and parcel why Wes Anderson is so brilliant a filmmaker. Rasix, you should check out the ND soundtrack - it's laden with the funny soundbytes and has the great cheesy music. The poppy electro stuff is so much fun (another Wes Anderson reference - the Life Aquatic music where Bill Murray is doing that little bop dance to the music piped into his diving suit).
And I agree with schild about a movie. I guess they can't all be Office Space.
Now that I know people read my blog I guess I'll hafta step things up a bit instead of talking about what I made for dinner or why I want to see Roll Bounce.
OMG the Daily Show was art last night.

What's funny? Here's a brief list of what's funny.
People who take anything on the internet seriously. People who take said "serious" matter personaly. Comeuppence. Red Dwarf. Standing behind closed doors so that when someone opens them you can scare them so badly they piss themselves.

It is on the internet. People WILL see it. Anything that has ever been on the internet, has looked at the internet, or has even thought about the internet is accessible.

I enjoyed Dude, Where's My Car? quite a lot. Not Anchorman, though.
We have a library cat. I had a mylar balloon that played Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy when you hit it. I clipped the balloon to her collar and she took that in stride. Then I hit it and Bobby started singing, she ran for the door. As she paused to give me the skunk eye, she saw the balloon flying at her, still singing. I've never seen her run so fast, the clip finally came off as she dove through some shelves several rooms away.

Super Troopers is funny, and Club Dread is just about as funny. Live-action Pac-Man? Pina-colada-burg? Paxton? Sweet.
Napoleon Dynamite is very funny. It is a very subtle absurdist comedy. Some people don't like that. I, however, love the absurd (see my list). It was ridiculous yet plausible, plus I have been in situations like Napoleon. I probably shouldn't admit that I can relate to him. I have to wonder just who really did get it, because it's kinda in-between-the-lines with the truly funny stuff. If all you came away with was Rex Kwon Do and the dance scene, I think you missed most of the movie.
Old School was fantastic. Anchorman was very funny, but Ferrel needs to take a vacation before he does a Jim Carrey. Ooops... too late!
Dude, Where's My Car is very, very funny.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles. If you go make a sandwich during the sappy scenes. For some reason, I think it is funny that they use the same house as in Home Alone.
I think The Blues Brothers is a total classic comedy. I would rank it above Caddyshack.
I think Freaked is hilarious. Alex Winter never got his due as a comedian. Several things were great in that one: Randy Quaid as a villan, Bobcat Goldthwait as a sock, Mr. T as a bearded lady, Brooke Shields voiced by Quaid saying "I'll drink your blood", and Keanu Reeves as Ortiz the Dog Boy. "Twelve milkmen is theoretically possible. Thirteen milkmen... that's just silly."
Anything by Mel Brooks. I mean it. Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Life Stinks, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, History of the World... you name it.
Kung Pow. Very funny. I said it and I am not ashamed.
I know that this post is movie-centric but I think most things are funny in some way, and I don't want to run out of Internet.

Napoleon Dynamite wasn't absurdist. Christ almighty.
It was basically nerds saying "Here, this is what it tastes like."
And then you leave the theatre with ugly virgin in your mouth. And some in your eye.

It is possible, assuming you are right, that the movie and I are broken in the same way.

It is possible, assuming you are right, that the movie and I are broken in the same way. You want to know what I think is the seminal absurdist comedy of this era? The Sweetest Thing. Yea, that movie with Christina Applegate, Cameron Diaz, and Selma Blair. Forget everything you know about reality and order. Not only is it absurd but it's possibly the most unpredictable movie I've ever seen. Helps that it sucks.

Anyone who thought Kung Pow was funny needs to have their humor meter recalibrated. And they are required to be sterilized.

Edit: On second thought, How to Get Ahead in Advertising could easily be classified as the ultra absurdist film as well. And Un Chien Andelou but that was made in 1929 or something and is near unwatchable now. Dude, They cut open an eyeball. Sure it's an animal. But it's horrifying.

Freaked was a very funny film. Now that it's out on DVD I recommend everyone give it at least a rental. Hollywood Squares, baby.

It was Toungey, wasn't it? That part was not funny. Kung-fu baby, aliens, woman with one boob, not so much. Most everything else, though, was funny. Maybe I have watched too many kung fu movies over the years. Can I just promise to not have any more kids? If cutting open an eyeball can be made funny, I am down with it, but it had better be funny. I have my doubts. Still, Reanimator was funny and you have someone being strangled by prehensile intestines... so maybe. Freaked was a very funny film. Now that it's out on DVD I recommend everyone give it at least a rental. Hollywood Squares, baby.
Heh... skeletal Paul Lynde. I was briefly worried that I might be surrounded by Philistines.

Happiness. Not because it's absurdist, but because it contains the single most excrutiatingly-un-PC-to-laugh-at scene in film history:
"Dad, do you want to fuck me?"

Happiness actually made me hurt. And I love some of the actors in it. It might be the most uncomfortable movie I've ever seen.

Speaking of incest, Takashi Miike's films crack me up.
Almost anything media or art-related that a "normal" person's brain would filter as offensive, comes through to me as hi-larious. Except the subway tunnel scene in Irreversible, but that's another thread I guess.

I think this site has its moments: http://overheardindublin.com/It's all people putting in stories of things they've experienced in Dublin. Example: In the Omniplex a while back, a particularly boring bit of the movie was on, when a cry came from the dark. Shadow at the front (shouting): "Anyone! Is there a doctor here? Is there a doctor here?" (Shock. Confusion.) Voice from the back: "Here - I'm a doctor" Voice from the front: "Sh*te film, isn't it?" ...and sat back down Voice from the back: "Little bastard - if I find ya I'll rattle ya"

Strange that you don't find Monica getting anally raped hilarious. Well, maybe if it didn't last TEN FUCKING MINUTES. Raping little boys? Funny. Grown women? Not so much.

So I come home, my cat will be staring out the window, once I come to the door, he'll jump down in front of the door and start rolling on the carpet, he knows it's about time to get fed, but he's torn, he also knows I'll brush him or pet him which is equally good. So, he'll get brushed or petted, then he'll run into the kitchen and sit beside his bowl, I'll open the door to the funace room, and he'll dart in because he is not supposed to go in there. I'll put some food in his bowl then herd him out of the room. I'll sort through the mail briefly, and he will have had a few mouthfuls of food. Then he will come back into the living room and roll some more and stare at me. I'll finally pet him a bit more. Then I'll head up to change out of my work cloths. But for the past few months, he's decided I'm not petting him enough and he'll wrap his front paws around my leg. (My cat is the most skittish cat I've ever seen, so to have him show any affection is very odd.) Anyways - I think it’s funny. I like faking him out just so he will do it.
