I read that this morning. I just happened to catch a show over the weekend about Humboldt squid, so the timing was interesting. Those fuckers are kinda scary, but I am pretty sure that I won't be at 900 m below sea level any time soon, so I am safe.

I thought that news was way cool - been waiting for this announcement since I was an eight year old kid reading Verne.

I'm still waiting for video of Leviathan... ;)

Funny I saw the same show.  "Armor Is The Only Way To Survive This Dive."  Those fucking things were over 5 feet and weighed what? >100lbs?  "The largest Humboldt ever filmed was about six feet and weighed nearly 100 pounds."  I think the "man eating squid" thing was played up a bit (and I don't think they ever actually gave evidence of any fatalities), but when they showed how each sucker arm had a beak in each sucker that was scary.  If those tentacles got around you, they could conceivably de-limb you in no time.

Holy moly...

Quote
These stories were true and I knew it. So I developed equipment and techniques to counter a possible attack. These precautions included: anti-squid armor suits; armor plating for the vulnerable parts of my mixed-gas rebreather; anti-squid cage; and back-to-back diving techniques. To prevent being pulled down by a pack of squid, steel cables connected divers to the boat at all times. If these measures sound extreme, I can assure you they weren’t. Each one came into play and proved to be completely necessary.

I'd rather dive on sharks - they're stupid.  Squid are way too smart to carry that kind of weaponry.

What link? What are you talking about? The last thing I posted in Useless NEws was the Napoleon Dynamite stuff which was promptly denned for being unfunny to the three most important persons on f13.

Yes!

Actually, since I'm still in my f13 infancy (despite my post #), I only had a brief encounter with Bruce and don't know who the others are. Color me lucky, I guess.

I forget, did Geldon eventually get banned or did he get chased off?  Sometimes I miss Bruce, but then I remember he was a raging cock whore furry.  I still think he did the Crystal Meth.  I saw a post by DV on Lums site; good to know he is alive!

Ahh the memories.

Bruce, Geldon, and DV?

You are a bad, bad man.  :-D

If you really must find out about Bruce, just google the little vole-rapist up. There's more than enough vomit-inducing ammunition there. Geld was never banned, he just didn't like being the butt of jokes and fucked on off to Grim's site or something. DV was banned for being a cockmuffin, then permabanned for posting tubgirl.

I feel like I'm treading on thin ice, such is the effect of banning. And I don't think I'm that bad. I'm good, right? Can I have a cookie?

Unicorns LA is still floating around our office.

I wouldn't worry Lilly, you really haven't come close to some of the things done that have earned real bans around here (don't take that s a challenge)

Oh, and on topic - this is actually really cool. I've always been fascinated by deep sea life. Watch a documentary once on guys heading out trying to film Giant Squid. It was an hour long documentary of nothing - they got diddly.

Nice to see some one finally got one.

I do not believe I have complimented your avatar as of yet.  Kudos to you ma'am.  I already said grats on the marriage thingy, so you know, grats on that also x2.  I finally broke down and had a cig, I am feeling much love for everyone.

As a reward for my love to everyone here is an Asian woman holding up an octopus (or is it a squid? Hell if I know the difference!)

Pfft, you're not even close to being bad I'd give you a cookie, if I was inclined to bake some.

Now get 1 or 2 admins to dislike you on a very personal level...that will put you on thin ice....if you actually care, that is.

I was listening to the YTMND gothified "What Is Love" and I glanced at the title of this thread, and I read it as "What Is Giant Squid".

Then all kinds of frightening images assaulted me.

I know people like that.  Seriously.  I did use the plural.  Knew a kid in high school named Binky Ward; I shouldn't have to add any detail to that.  I played D&D/Paranoia/MtG/etc with people like what you see described/pictured.  These people are who started me on MUDs.

Could be why I think Napoleon is funny.  I can relate, tacky house and everything.
