Shadow of the Colossus [PS2]

Just got the demo from this month's OPM. My god. That game is fucking hard. Sure, sure, I know. There's only 8 levels and the levels themselves are the colossus.' Nonetheless, the game is beautiful (even if the demo is nowhere near done), and the final product from the looks of things is likely to be game of the year material.

How are the controls handling so far?  The whole concept could lend itself to dodgy controls if they don't make it a priority.

The controls turned out to be ok. I can trash that colossus in about 3 minutes tops now. Took about 30-45 minutes to assault all the weak points though. In fact, I found 3 ways up the colossus. Pretty damn cool. As a whole, the controls are as they should be. You aren't playing a legendary ninja or knight here - they are....damnit. The game will be really fucking good.  :-D

Without doing any research, and just looking at some video, would I be correct in saying that this came from the same people who made Ico?

Well, of course it's them. I mean really, who else could it be? The only company that has ripped off an art style completely and one hundred percent to my recollection (recently) are Webzen with Wiki (A Windwaker ripoff).

The most interesting aspect of this game to me is that from what I understand there will be no weapon or armor power ups, no character levels, and 1 HUGE overland map.  So...  the game must be purely skill based, right?  I'm hoping so. 

I've never played Ico.  I'm going to go pick it up for $8 or whatever as soon as I'm done with God of War (dear god this game is fun).

It's sad when a lack of such things have become rare to a gamer. Too many rpg's in your diet?

I'm not trying to be an ass or anything..I'm just wondering. I guess having 1 big map is a rare thing, but for most part, those others barely exist in the console world. The occasional action game may have them (Spider-Man 2, for instance...But to me, the power lvls were actually a welcome addition), but for most part, you'll only find them in rpg's. Ico (and I'm guessing Colossus as well) is more akin to an adventure/puzzle game. You'll see none of that other stuff.

Bah.  I didn't think you were being an ass, and you are right, I haven't played much of anything other than RPGs in the past couple years.  Also, the only Adventure type of game I've played since Space Quest is Resident Evil, and I'm not sure that really counts.  I guess I'm a little out of touch.

Console games haven't excited me much in a long while either, but they are starting to again.  It's fun because I have a huge backlog of games to choose from at my local gamestop, and most of them are less than $15. 

BTW I'll probably go pick up ICO tomorrow thanks to this thread.  Now I feel like I'm missing out on something :)

Are you one of those guys who skips through cutscenes and dialogs and just wants to get to the "blowing up things" part? Not an insult or anything...Just asking, because I know quite a few people who are that way.

No, I actually sit and read the shit. I sometimes skip through if it also has a VO, but I'm done reading the dialogue.

Granted, the game has to have Good writing for this to happen....but I'm not in the business of buying Bad Games. Besides DX2, I can't even remember the last Bad game I bought...

I would really have to dig to find a game I don't like in my collection.

Dig through the archives of Adventure games. I'm aware that my bias has some part in saying this, but I'd be really surprised if you couldn't have fun with Full Throttle, Sam and Max, Sanitarium, Grim Fandango, the Myst series (Exile for shiny)...Hell, even Star Control 2, which was mentioned in the other thread, has adventure elements. A lot of great games do, so you probably do like them.

And myst annoyed me to the point of using a walkthrough.

I was 9 years old.

However, I did actually beat 7th Guest.

I can take the hate, I know that EQ and WoW have ruined me.  While I admire the design and concept of these types of games I just cant enjoy playing them.  I could not play ICO as well, I could watch the GF play and take it in like a movie, but could not be the one with the controller.

From the spectator's point of view, Horror games are pretty entertaining, I suppose...

There are games that I don't enjoy playing but love watching Righ play.  WoW, for one.  I'm total crap at driving games, like the GT series.  All I can do, basically, is hit one side of the road, then the other, on and on, endless forever.  It's embarrassing and practice doesn't help.  Anyway... I have a great time watching him play. I find driving games very exciting to watch.  Scary games, on the other hand... that should be my thing since I really like scary movies and books but I still have Fatal Frame 2 sitting on the shelf, unopened, because it looks really, really scary and scary games really, really scare me, for some strange reason.   :-(

As an aside, Righ doesn't watch me play games much.  It's not something he enjoys like I do, unless we're playing something together.   Even when I wave my hands frantically, shouting, "Look at me!  Look at me!", he usually smiles but rarely looks up.
