Brits driving Austrians bonkers over rude village nameSun Aug 28, 6:35 AM ET LONDON, (AFP) - British tourists have left the residents of one charming Austrian village effing and blinding by constantly stealing the signs for their oddly-named village. While British visitors are finding it hilarious, the residents of F---ing are failing to see the funny side, The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported. Only one kind of crimimal ever stalks the sleepy 32-house village near Salzburg on the German border -- cheeky British tourists armed with a sense of humour and a screwdriver. But the local authorities are hitting back and with the signs now set in concrete, police chief Kommandant Schmidtberger is on the lookout. "We will not stand for the F---ing signs being removed," the officer told the broadsheet. "It may be very amusing for you British, but F---ing is simply F---ing to us. What is this big F---ing joke? It is puerile." Local guide Andreas Behmueller said it was only the British that had a fixation with F---ing. "The Germans all want to see the Mozart house in Salzburg," he explained. "Every American seems to care only about 'The Sound of Music' (the 1965 film shot around Salzburg). The occasional Japanese wants to see Hitler's birthplace in Braunau. "But for the British, it's all about F---ing." Guesthouse boss Augustina Lindlbauer described the village's breathtaking lakes, forests and vistas. "Yet still there is this obsession with F---ing," she said. "Just this morning I had to tell an English lady who stopped by that there were no F---ing postcards."

I wonder if they have that problem in Weed, California (near Mt. Shasta). I swear I couldn't take enough pictures of signs in that town.

There's a state park right down the road from me called, I kid you not, "Big Bone Lick."
Lots of snickers ensue when out-of-towners hear locals discussing the great time they had camping at Big Bone Lick.

Major Richard Bong, the American fighter pilot with the highest number of downed enemy aircraft, 40 between 1942 and 1944 in the Pacific Theater. He was ordered home to sell war bonds, against his wishes, and then became a test pilot. On August 6, 1945, while half a world away the Enola Gay dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, Bong stepped into an airplane for the last time. His P-80 malfunctioned just after take-off, and while he bailed out, he never had a chance. He was just too close to the ground. After surviving two years of combat flying, Richard Ira Bong met his end while on a routine acceptance flight. As a young midwestern pot head in the 1970's, I always got a chuckle out of the Bong Recreation area.

Sounds like you kids go on interesting vacations. The funniest signs I have ever photographed were tsunami warning signs along the Oregon Coast...for some reason the image of a guy sprinting up a hill with a big wave chasing him was funny. Less so since December 26, 2004, however.

From Merusk: http://www.lvgsc.org/Really is a shame to den this thread. It's become good fun. Maybe we could just den the song lyrics and see if anyone has any other pics of this nature they've taken/found/googled?

I spent a lot of time when I was growing up in a little place called Gearheart, Oregon. In the middle of the 'town' there is one of those Tsunami evacuation route signs (water, dude running, arrow pointing thataway! You are supposed to follow those silly little signs to high ground as the ginormous wave approaches and whatnot). Of course, what I (at least) found humorous was that the little hillock which was the evacuation point was actually lower in elevation than the ridge overlooking the Ocean. So, if a Tsunami were to hit, and then get past the hotels and the beachfront houses, all the people on the lovely evacuation hill would have a wonderful view of the wall of water about to squish them. And then my grandparents would tell me to shut the hell up with my over active imagination.

That "Fucking - bitte nicht so schnell!" coincidence is quite embarrassing in context. But its fine, British tourists steal the sign anyway before people get the unintended association. If you squint at the picture you can almost recognize somebody in the shadows sprinting for a quick sign grabage.

First of all, why does Signe get to post in the Den? Second of all, why is it that everyone else gets to post song lyrics, in lyric form, and the first time I do it (in paragraph form no less) I get it denned without warning? I call no fairs. Shockeye always picks on me.

I was about to say "see that <insert color> text she has? that's why", so I scroll up to which which color it is and am shocked, SHOCKED to see it is plain white. This is a case of blatant favoratism and I demand answers explaining this travesty of justice. What was it? Cookies? Cake? Chocolate Sundae with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, sugared cherries, 2 thin straws, and a spoon? Just how low did you guys sell out for?

Or maybe someone hacked my account. Like Schild or WAP. I don't know what you're talking about. Who the hell are you, anyway? How the hell did you get in here?

Dammit.
I have a great picture on my phone but don't have the service required to email it to myself.
Suffice it to say that it's simply a sign from a restaurant in Chicago...."Line For Tossed Salads"
There were people in the tossed salad line. The photo was classic. Fuck you very much Sprint for wanting me to pay more to be able to USE the stupid photos my phone can take.
Also, the Bong Family Recreation Center rules. I used to have designs on stealing that sign. In other news, while travelling east thru Tennessee on I-40, you'll notice that the mile marker for mile 420 is almost always missing.

I would really like to know what that sign means as well. I just noticed the dog also seems to be be male and... Is that a photoshop or did some kids draw those on?
