Poor Slashdotters."Gaah. I don't tend to bother about slashdot, because quite frankly, the whole _point_ of slashdot is to have this big public wanking session with people getting together and making their own 'insightful' comment on any random topic, whether they know anything about it or not."
-- Linus Torvalds, in an e-mail elaborating on his defense of a Linux trademark

(edit) Is anyone watching Slashdot to see when this shows up there? Linus ragging on Slashdot is going to provoke about the same reaction as God flinging a fiery meteor into the Vatican.

It's been clear for a while that Linus is outside the mainstream of Open Source (which is an odd paradox give that his software is the flagship of OS). Which is why the people on Slashdot have been critizing him. Which is why Linus complains about them.
But who really gives a shit as long as he keeps hammering out the kernal. It is a shame about the trademark thing, small distros aren't going to be able to call themselves Linux anymore.

Well, isn't that what the Internet is here for?

[ And don't get me wrong - I follow slashdot too, exactly because it's fun to see people argue. I'm not complaining ;]

Slashdot jumped the shark about three years ago. Once it became popular anyone who knew what they were talking about got drowned out by random noise and all the good posters stopped bothering. It used to be that if an interesting topic came up then there would be a good chance that people directly involved in it would chime in. JPL Physicists discussing some stellar phenomena or the developers of MySQL and PostgreSQL debating a DB topic. Last time I went there 70-80% of the posts at +5 where just bad attempts at humor and most of the remainder were barely on topic.

The vault doesn't even qualify as communication.

Yeah, but the license fee is scaled pretty well. $200/yr isn't too bad at the low end but should be lower for non-profits I think. But, protecting a mark just in the US is pretty damn expensive, I imagine having to do the work across the globe is pretty costly. A good article on all of this is at http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20050816092029989. Good clear explanation of why this had to be done.

The force of that quote and Slashdot colliding could destroy reality.

The quote already hit slashdot, no one cared. Don't you hate when people don't live up to your expectations.

of course, Linus was apparently attacked in one of the main and older unix newsgroups a few years ago (forget reading it where): allegations and gossip and some news reporting over his divorce, and that he physically abused his wife. Stack that up with the usual immature/ego-filled unix rants on such a group and you can imagine he's a little gunshy

He's Scandinavian. Beating your wife is a national hobby, second only to drinking yourself to death, which lasts a wee bit longer than the wife, usually.
