Racist Police Dog Claims Tossed

PITTSBURGH -- A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against the McKees Rocks police by black residents who claim a police dog targeted them because of their race.

U.S. District Judge Arthur Schwab found no evidence to support claims by Mark and Lorraine Livingston that Dolpho, a police dog who bit their 9-year-old son, was trained to single out blacks.

The dog was being used to chase a drug dealer when it encountered the boy and bit him in June 2002.

"... (P)laintiffs make bold accusations of racial profiling but offer no actual evidence," Schwab wrote in the opinion issued Wednesday.

The judge tossed out related claims by a former black police dispatcher and black borough Councilwoman Wanda Jones-Dixon. The women claimed they were discriminated against for speaking out about the dog, but the judge said there was no evidence that happened either.

I had a dog when I was a kid that would react almost violently to black men coming around. It was a gentle, loving creature to everyone else, but the dog did not like black people. And no, we did nothing to do the dog to engender such a reaction, but it was a stray we adopted, so I'm thinking something had happened to it early on.
