Once I get home.  My work computer is about to get wiped and installed with the Longhorn/Vista beta.  If you don't hear from me for the rest of the day, it's because things went horribly awry.

I'm currently pulling it off Filerush, but torrents from there suck for some reason.

Well, I already downloaded it.  I'm waiting for someone to tell me how awful it is so I won't have to actually try it.

FEAR should be good. You're not playing it because you're scared of little girls. Be honest now.

I'm scared of nearly everything.  It's what's so charming about me.  Playing scary games, however, is my number one scary thing.  I'd play them if Righ would look at me while I do but he won't... he just keeps looking at his own screen, even with me yelling, "Look at me!  Look at me!"  I can't watch scary movies alone, either... except for those made by that M. Night Somethingorother guy.  His scary movies aren't scary at all.

I said scary five times in that post!

No no... six!

Finally got it installed.

Very creepy, but the plot is well uhh...kinda retarded at this point. The characters in the game mention how dumb it is though.

Fear is also very hard, this is because the enemies do pretty much as much damage to you as you do to them with the same weaponry, and they are actually really fucking smart! Smarter than Half Life 2's combine, surprisingly smart. Every single player FPS I've played since Half Life has talked about how their AI makes enemies "use cover" and "flank" you, but these guys actually DO flank you and use cover the whole time. They seem to enjoy jumping over barriers and through windows a bit too much however.

Case in point: There's an L-Shaped hallway that has windows looking in on an office (for lack of better words). There are 3 guys in the office, one facing the door, one in the corner which turns into another hallway, and one standing towards one of the sides with a window. I open the door, jack the guy facing the door with my shotgun. The one in the corner immediately opens fire on me and backs into the hallway, while the other immeadiately dives through the window without even firing a shot. I now have one guy hiding behind the corner in front of me, and another who is now coming around the hallway to get behind me. Pretty cool.

I've died several times and I'm less than 10 minutes into the demo.

Still got the installer, Fab?  And if so, howzabout posting it in the downloads forum?  I am now insanely curious.

The OS install went OK btw, just took longer than I expected.  Vista itself is kinda pretty, and horribly unstable at the moment.  Mreh.

What the hell would possess someone to install an OS that doesn't come in a box at least somewhere.

And I don't want any Linux Lip because of the above comment. That's not an operating system.

That's more or less how I approached the Vista install, philosophically.  It was much less painless than the last time I tried to get a Linux desktop environment up and running.   wink  Now all they have to do is make Explorer not crash every ten minutes and I'll be happy.

Because we already have customers writing in demanding to know if our stuff is supported on Vista, so someone had to take the plunge to start kicking the tires.  Plus I'm curious enough about stuff like hardware accelerated UI and OO shell scripting to risk life on the bleeding edge.   :-D

Um, Avalon isn't in Vista.

Also, this topic is about the F.E.A.R. demo dammit. Someone else has to have played it. SChild needs to fucking install it, since he's the resident Ringu whore (on a related note, the Japanese version of Dark Water is cool).

Um, Avalon isn't in Vista.

Apparently it is (if my reading of the documentation is right).  The problem is that there aren't any applications yet that use it, but that's going to change soon.  And the basic desktop UI is shinier than Aqua, if such a thing is possible.

(edit) Here's the info on Avalon/Indigo that appeared on my desktop after install:
Quote
The pre-release code name “Avalon” and “Indigo” Beta 1 software adds new developer features to Windows code name "Longhorn" for enhanced graphics and communications.  Install from your Longhorn Beta1 media under ..\Support\WinFX or download here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/longhorn.  Developers should also install the WinFX SDK and take advantage of additional WinFXTM related resources on MSDN: http://winfx.msdn.microsoft.com/library/.  The installation process for “Avalon” and “Indigo” will be more integrated in future releases of Longhorn.

The Software package includes:

Avalon
"Avalon" is the code name for Microsoft’s unified presentation subsystem for Windows, consisting of a display engine and a managed-code framework. It unifies how Windows creates, displays, and manipulates documents, media, and user interface, and enables developers and designers to create visually-stunning, differentiated user experiences.

Indigo
"Indigo" is the code name for Microsoft’s new Service-oriented communications infrastructure built on top of web services protocols. The advanced web service support in "Indigo" provides interoperable secure, reliable, and transacted messaging.

(edit) and I'm attempting to torrent the demo now, but it's taking ages.

Co-worker burned the demo for me because he sucked at the game and wants to see how I do. Not to mention my internet is so bad it would probably take a day or two to download it.

Alright, if I can find a direct download for the demo somewhere, I'll get it and post my thoughts.

Yes, the original Dark Water is awesome. The Connelly one isn't supposed to be as bad as Gellar's Grudge, but then, what is?

I'm in the mood for some scary shit tonight. ^_^

My upstream sucks and the demo is like 600+ megs so I'm not uploading it, but since I felt like experimenting with video encoding I made a video of me playing a little bit of the demo. Couple of the gunfights don't go the way I want them to, but not bad overall.

Xvid is a great codec. 800x600, pretty good quality, 3 minutes or so of video, and only 66 Megs or so. That's not bad considering the resolution.

That was pretty cool, thanks dude! How come that first soldier didn't die when you head shot him though? Given the blood spray you would have thought his head was blown off.

I dunno how you missed it, but the very first soldier I shot fucking EXPLODED when I headshot him. It's a bug or something. Most of the time it either just drops him or pops his head off. The second one dived out of the room he was in and behind those boxes.

The second group of soldiers, the first one DID die. It popped his head clean off. There was another one behind him though.

edit: I need to learn how to click. Accidentally locked the topic for a second. Yeesh.
