I figure once she has developed her hand eye coordination to proper levels I will move her on to Nintendo.  I do not want her to start with Playstation or those other fancy doo dads just yet; I figure learning about game play before the shiny will help her in the long run.  FYI She is yelling at the game already for "not being fair."  Oh youth.

Id say grab the just released Atari Flashback 2 (NOT the first one, the new one.).  30 bucks, 40 games, compatible with almost every Atari port type joystick AND paddle, and with a little wiring becomes a full 2600, only really small.  And unlike most of these TV game things it has an AC adaptor.  No batteries!

That thing looks like it's hard on hands.

Nintendo's controllers are the best, I think, ergonomically, although the PS2 isn't too bad.  (This coming from an arthritic who can't play consoles much anymore due to thumb problems).  Of course, your daughter's hands are still smaller than mine but my son was playing the N64 at 2.

He started to get good between 3 and 4.  At 9, he does all the "hard parts" for me now on games when I play console (short periods at a time only these days, sigh).

But he won't get me past that stupid space pod fight in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.  I can't fing beat that stupidgdamposdirtymotherfathering game scene.  And it's at the beginning of the game.  No cheat code or anything.  Anyone know of a mod for it?

My 3 year old and i play wow, although a very censored part. I don't think he's clear on 'death' yet, although we've started a discussion on why it's not cool to randomly make bugs dead. (i know, he will, i did, but there's a all living things angle im going for). Anyway, we shop the AH, craft, play capture the flag. I'm probably doing him a great disservice.

He also gets lots of computer exposure to age appropriate content. Now, more titties please.

EDIT: Oh and of all the games and kid sites available his favourite thing is to have a Word window open where he can spell names and numbers in giant fornt. Go figure. Still waiting on titties btw.

For the PC.  It's so damned annoying, too, because when I fail (which I do, every time), I have to reload the loaded game, which takes a couple of minutes.  If it was more instant, it wouldn't be a problem, and I'd merely view it as practice.  But it's a gdpita instead. And there's no way to practice the scene easily.

Also, despite this being completely offtopic for this thread, I'd like to point out the glaringly obvious fact that having a twitch scene in a non-twitch RPG with no way to get around it is just fing stupid and a horrible game design decision.  Bastages.

Hehe I remember the old amiga controllers, which if I recall correctly were very much like the atari ones. They had 2 buttons which really only was 1 in reality. I really really liked them but after a long session of intensive games you could get pretty sore fingers. The buttons got a tad bad after a while and required you to push harder and harder to respond. Anyway, great times, great games and everything.

My wife would spontaneously combust if I let our daughter play something like that (alas), so I have to settle for WoW--the kid thinks my gnome warlock is a baby and giggles uncontrollably whenever I fight something.  Especially wolves, I think she likes the barking.

We have a couple of those little plug-in joystick games like the ones previously mentioned, but the daughter and wife just end up fighting over who gets to play Pac-man :)

If you are willing to give it another try - here's a couple suggestions. Number one - as soon as the minigame starts loading, just start mashing the mouse button epileptic style. The ships all start in a bunch and if you are firing right off, you'll kill a couple before anything starts. Otherwise, just keep shooting. I'm far from great at space sims, but was able to get by it every time.

The Kempston sticks had buttons on both sides (lefthanded vs. righthanded use). Back then, most computers shared the same D9 port standard for (digital) joysticks, so there was a huge market, dominated by Kempston (rugged) and QuickShot (brittle).

Analog joysticks? Back then only the Acorn machines (BBC) and professional workstations used that.

(Got an XBox and a knack for hacking hardware? Make a D9 adapter on your controller to play like the old days! Mostly for playing Amiga games on the UAEX emulator, apparently. Don't have a digital joystick? Make one, then!)
