Chappelle's Show Is 'Done,' Murphy Says
By Associated Press

NEW YORK - Time to face the facts: Dave Chappelle's hit Comedy Central series isn't coming back, says one of its stars. "`Chappelle's Show' is over, man. Done," comic Charlie Murphy told TV Guide. "It took me a long time to be able to say those words, but I can say it pretty easy now, because it's the truth."

Chappelle's sudden "spiritual retreat" to South Africa on the eve of his show's third season has left the series in limbo since May. About half of a new season had been filmed before Chappelle left, Murphy said.

"I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody," he said. "`Chappelle's Show' was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick."

Comedy Central has always said the door is open for Chappelle to return, spokeswoman Aileen Budow said Wednesday.

Network chief Doug Herzog met with Chappelle on June 3, but that has been their last communication, she said.

Murphy, the older brother of comic Eddie Murphy, said his two seasons with Chappelle made him a star.

"Now I can go out and do stand-up," he said. "I'm getting movie offers. It's off the hook. Me getting to the next level or whatever's going to happen is going to come from the next things I do, but `Chappelle's Show' served its purpose and I'll always be grateful.
"

I literally came to post this thirty seconds after you did.  Sad, sad...teh funny was of sufficient quality to overcome the incredibly annoying catchphrases that every collegian of minimal wit yelled 5000 times a day.

So, Chapelle couldn't come up with enough edgy material. God love the man, but I wish he'd admit that publically.

That was my take on it, too. Comedy Central put a ton of pressure and expectation on him, I don't blame him a bit for choking, nothing could have lived up to the hype. Better to regroup and smoke lots of weed, write some new material away from the spotlight.

Sad day, but better than a crappy half-assed season of a great show. Burn out rather than fade away and whatnot.

Hmm, I figured it was because CC wanted too much creative control because they ponied up so much money.

He did so much in 2 years; he has a lot to be proud of even if this is the last thing he ever does.

So Charlie Murphy really IS Eddie Murphy's older brother? I thought that was just part of the bit. Damn. That makes the whole Rick James/Prince basketball thing even funnier.

I too would rather see Chappelle not do shitty material just to cash a $50 million paycheck.

Fuck that.  I'd fellate Ernest Borgnine on national television to cash a $50 million paycheck.

No, but that's immaterial to my cashing the paycheck.  Whether you fuckers enjoy the show wouldn't concern me a lick.

I would.  That would unseat Geraldo opening Al Capone's vault as the greatest TV moment of all time.

Well, right now you'd blow someone for $50mil.  But chances are that Chapelle has all the money he really needs, and has a pretty good shot at more money.  At a guess, he's got movie offers out the ass.  So when you've got a decent shot at $50mil that doesn't involve blowing someone, you probably aren't as eager.

Same goes for producing a shitty quality show.  He probably doesn't really NEED the money, and if he wants it that bad he can probably get it doing something else with less work.

I was listening until they said they secretly met in the Omni in Atlanta. There's ZERO way that many powerful blacks could get into Atlanta under the radar.

Why do people have to make things more complicated than they really are?

My guess?

Dave couldn't produce that much material, couldn't handle the stress, and/or his trip to Africa and subsequent religious renewal made him feel guilty/above the comedy/money.

I thought his show as surprisingly funny and I own both DVDs, but the man was never more than a low-rent Chris Rock to me. Half of his stand up material was cribbed DIRECTLY from Chris'.

I'll have to listen to Bring the Pain again along with some of Chris and Dave's stuff I have, but an example of a bit that was copied almost word for word was Chris' description of what men really want from their wives.

Quotes aren't exact.

Chris: "Food, Sex, and Silence! Feed me, fuck me, SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
Dave: "Make him some dinner, play with his balls, and don't talk so much!"

There's more to that one bit, but it really struck me when I heard it on Dave's special after listening to Chris' at work.

It definately wasn't a case of "above the money/comedy." The religious aspect of it is bullshit. Total bullshit. The moment he came back from wherever he went and did the HBO comedy thing and said some of the most racist stuff he's ever spit out. It was funny and he definately hasn't run out of material.

Yeah, the religious stuff probably isn't a big part of it. I still hold to the catass, World of Warcraft theory myself. That's completely understandable as far as I'm concerned.

Meh, it was all sort of sketchy. Fun to read, nonetheless. Stuff like that always is. Problem is, I could write one of those up right now - and PROBABLY make it sound more realistic. And if this group is so powerful, why is that website up?

Fun to read, of course.

That site is ridiculous.

For instance

Quote
Farrakhan leaned in to Dave and said "it certainly would be a shame if anything were to happen to your father..." nearby diners reported.

Nearby diners reported?

To who?

Did the author find out who was at the dinner that night, who was seated near Chappelle, and go to talk to each of them and ask them if they heard anything suspicious during that night?  Did they call the cops to report Farrakhan making a vague threat that was none of their business and may have been taken out of context?

There are all these things "reported", so much solid evidence left, and yet we hear no word about it?  Why wouldn't Dave take these supposed photos of his sleeping children with an Al Sharpton-like figure standing next to them to the police?  Or to his agent, at least, to get some bodyguards?  And seriously, the Dark Crusaders are going to go through all the effort to have people break into Dave's house, drug his wife, wake him up to threaten him, and fucking OPRAH is going to be there PERSONALLY?  Are you serious??

I know the site is bullshit.  My only question is whether it was bullshit intended to seriously fool people, or put up for a laugh and to see if anyone was actually dumb enough to buy it.

Question:

What was with the previews for Season 3 of Chappelle's Show on the Comedy Central Last Laugh '05 thing?  I didn't catch them- were they real previews?  They just going to show what they did manage to film of season 3, or did some miracle happen and everything get wrapped up?

Most of season 3 got filmed. Well, the sketches did. So Season 3 of the Chapelle show is just a bunch of sketches. I'd be surprised if they can drag it out 13 episodes (a half season).

Chappelle Theory Exposed

The Dead Frog blog tipped us off that the minds behind The Chappelle Theory site, which alleged that Oprah Winfrey (among others) was behind a plot to drive Dave Chappelle crazy and get his show off the air, have revealed themselves. As it turns out, the site was a viral marketing ploy for The Chappelle Theory Exposed, a short film by Chappelle’s Show star Charlie Murphy and Neal Brennan, Chappelle’s writing partner. We can’t help feeling disappointed that the Theory wasn’t first scrawled on a wall in crayon by a schizophrenic fan and then carefully transcribed onto a very nicely designed web page, but we can’t say we’re surprised. If nothing else, this little exercise in sneaky marketing gave us The Cosby Theory, which made all our dashed hopes for a genuine bit of crazy worth it.
