If I'd had the brat pack keeping me down as the token I'd probably strap on some horns eventually too.

I just got back from seeing it and was pleasantly surprised.  Depp's Wonka was very different from Dahl's Wonka (and Wilder's Wonka, who was different in his own way), but the story as a whole was pretty well preserved.  Good sets, good music, good effects, good characters.   Thumbs up!

His stories are dark, depressing, full of violent adults who lash out in capricious whims, all to justify escapism that can be justified in other ways.
But that is also one of the things that make the Harry Potter novels so good: They are Roald Dahl children's books plus an intriguing crime plot in each. Think Big Friendly Giant with Voldemort and the Death Eaters as the other trolls.

Can't wait for the movie to reach these shores. Then again I never got around to seeing The Big Fish.

Fantastic movie, once again Depp makes Burton look better than he is - though after seeing the Corpse Bride trailer for the Nth time, I have no desire to ever see that (i'm not a huge fan of Nightmare anyway). Despite loving Wilder playing Wilder dressed up as Wonka, Depps character was far more in line with the book. I wish they hadn't shown the other families leaving the factory, but they probably had to in order to retain the hordes of children who would inevitably see this film. Depp at no point reminded me of Jacko and that complaint seems like a bit too much reaching for me. There's better things to complain about in the movie than the inspiration for the role. The Elfman score itself was meh...surprise. It was nice to hear the original Roald Dahl songs done in a Pfunk style. And the homage to 2001 was nice. All in all it's one of the better movies I've seen this year.

On that note, Legend of Zorro uses the exact same music as Pirates of the Caribbean. Sky High still looks dumb as shit. Saw a trailer for Barnyard somethingarather from Nickelodeon - I'm ashamed of ever being a child and making my parents go see shit like that. Ah, and GTO (the Live Action movie from Japan) comes out next Tuesday on DVD. it seems Media Blasters managed to secure the rights to the Live Action stuff. Let me just say that it's some of the best shit ever put on film - Takashi Sorimachi is fucking brilliant as Onizuka. Unfortunately the movie that's being released (which is obviously testing the waters for the possible release of the TV show) is the weakest link in the entire production (11 episode series + a special + this movie). Nonetheless, if you have any interest in seeing what Japanese TV or culturally entrenched movies are like, take a gander at this - shit, buy it. Supporting releases like this is the only way stuff like Hero, Beautiful Life, Concerto, Oyaji, Gokusen, Friends, Shota no Sushi, etc, and the rest of the GTO series will ever be released stateside with proper subtitles.

Saw it last night.  I liked it, I thought it was a well done whimsical piece with lots of interesting visuals and even (for hollywood) dialogue.  My date was annoyed that they weren't showing The Island as advertised outside the theater but I think she liked it too even though she kept picking on the Oompa Loopa guy.

Same thing at the theater I went to. The Island on the Marquee, movie nowhere to be found. Odd.
