Stopgap Measure

on: June 23, 2005, 06:22:16 AM

There is a double dose of awful media stories saying games like this could turn you into a zombie killer.

First a South Korean soldier goes nuts, then there is another "scientific" report based on nonsense.

So remember - if you see an apache attack helicopter by the side of the road don't hop in and start strafing people on the freeway.  rolleyes

In a detailed report on Sunday's incident in which a soldier tossed a grenade among barrack comrades and then opened fire, the ministry said the private -- officially identified only as "Kim" -- had planned the crime for at least a week because of bullying.

Bolding mine. Good identification; after all that probably covers only about 90 percent of the force.

Wired up to a scanner, they were asked to play a game involving navigating through a complicated bunker, killing attackers and rescuing hostages.

Mathiak found that as violence became imminent, the cognitive parts of the brain became active and that during a fight, emotional parts of the brain were shut down.

The pattern was the same as that seen in subjects who have had brain scans during other simulated violent situations.

It suggests that video games are a "training for the brain to react with this pattern," Mathiak says.

Wow, the brain, which controls, you know, reactions to stimuli became active when it was apparent it was going to have to react to stuff. What a fucking shock. Yes, asshead, the game trains the brain to react to patterns in ways that are appropriate. Thank you, asshead journalist for being a douchebag and saying it trains people TO KILL!!!!!

It doesn't train the brain to react as if the violence was real, you fucking monkey nut, it trains the brain TO REACT. PERIOD. It trains the brain to react in a manner that it deems appropriate. Fucking retards.

But GTA: Vice City has already conditioned me to very specific responses on what to do when I find an Apache by the roadside.

Did they repeat the experiment with nonviolent twitchy games like, say, Tetris?  I wouldn't be shocked if they found very similar reactions.

I'd be more shocked if they bothered to test "non-violent" games like Tetris.

I like their sampling of only 13 humans out of 6 billion. Brilliant.
