Looking to buy a headset to use teamspeak/ventrillo.  Never owned one before, so I'm looking for brand/model advice.  Thanks in advance.

edit: now with title that is actually related to the post~

If you preorder Battlefield 2, I think EB is giving away a decent headset.

No, it's complete shit. No in-line volume.

Here are two choices for you.

Altec Lansing Closed Earcup Stereo Headset with Microphone
Model: AHS-502

Altec Lansing Behind-the-Neck Stereo Headset with Microphone
Model: AHS-302

I've used both and they are decent. I'm stuck with a crappy Logitech one right now. Avoid those.

I have been using one that I got for free with UT2K4. Its a behind the head logitech. Its small, light, and I can wear it for hours while playing WoW.

Seems to work good. The sound quality isnt the best, but for MMOG/Ventrilo, you dont need super 5.1 dolby surround.

You can get one at newegg for like $12.

In-line volume control with mute microphone is the most useful thing you'll find on any set of headphones.

I used to use these ones. Decent sound quality and very comfortable on my head and ears. They are USB headphones but you can use them with an existing sound card if you like (though you've then paid for the USB box you aren't using). Unfortunately I ran over the cable one too many times and now I only get sound out of one side. The really cool people (well as cool as you can be as still be a gamer) use one of these. I'm currently using the headphones I got with the GuildWars CE though those are kind of uncomfortable for me since I wear glasses so I'll be replacing them soon.

It depends what you like and find comfortable. I tried several types of headphones over a few weeks but they all gave me the shits since I didn't like the thing pressed against my ear, especially since I wear glasses. Also they interfered with my ability to listen to the TV or people in the room with me.

To get around it, I ended up buying a clip-on lapel mike. No inline volume or mute, but not being pressed against my ear works for me. I keyboard toggle-mute and just listen to my idiot mates through the speakers instead.

Probably not what you're after, but if you find headsets shit you, there's other options.

Ahh. I haven't picked mine up yet, so I was just going by what I was told.

I think this is the one I have. It is good enough; my only complaint is that the microphone is not sensitive enough no matter how far I crank up the settings. I have to practically swallow the mic in order to be heard on TS- the mic is literally >3 inches from my mouth. Not exactly built for comfort.

These are excellent and the mike is a clip-on so you can use it seperately or not at all, when you just want the good sound.

I would like to discuss this more with you, but I'm not allowed to post in Politics anymore.

Did you turn on the +20 dB mic boost in the sound control panel?

I want to say that I did, but I would have to check. I spent the better part of 30 minutes trying to be heard. Not that I ever have anything important to say. Or could get a word in edgewise when Schild and Strazos are on  evil evil

Here's the thing. I don't know where "cockles" came from. But it's possibly the funnest word ever to say.

Man, that sentence was hard to type.
