Okay, the new burner isn't working either. Fresh OS install on a brand new hard drive, new IDE cable, even a new spindle of DVD's and it's still not burning right. What order should I install stuff in? I was installing windows, then service packs, then the NForce driver for the board, then the other drivers. Should I be doing the NForce driver before the service packs? I'm about to take the thing to a PC shop, which is quite embarassing.

In general, I go through the following.

Install the box to get everthing up and running.  I do not install anything peripheral till I get the box up to snuff.  Then install the Burner and it's software.

Elaborate on 'isn't working'.  Does it not show up at all under the Device Manager?

I use 2 burning programs. Alcohol and DVD Decrypter (the built in burner is fabulous).  If something isn't in ISO form, I make it an ISO. None of that custom contents shit. Everything is ISO'd up for easy archival.

My recommendation is to do things in this order:

1) Install Windows (XP presumably)
2) Install nForce/other required drivers
3) Install burning software
4) Test drive

If that all works, install SP1 (if it wasn't already part of the initial install), then test again, then install SP2, then test again.
