Officer Runs Over Hit-and-Run Victim

By The Associated Press

(06/09/05 -- GASTONIA) — A police officer responding to an emergency call reporting that a man had been struck by a car accidentally ran over the victim with his patrol cruiser Thursday, police said.

Investigators remained uncertain about whether the victim was dead when he was struck a second time by the police car, Capt. Tony Robinson of the Gaston County Sheriff's Department.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was investigating.

The victim's name was not available, Robinson said.

According to police, Sgt. M.A. Johnson and officer J.C. May, driving separate police cruisers, were sent to investigate after a 911 call came in at 3:10 a.m.

Johnson arrived at the location but did not immediately find anything. Shortly after that, May approached the scene and he was blinded by the high beams of a parked car when he struck the victim.

The victim was in the road and pronounced dead at the scene.

May is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Highway Patrol's investigation.
