Oddly enough, that's what I thought.
And it also strikes me that it makes banning porn a work at fuck of a lot easier. No pun intended.

This is a really good idea, and way way overdue. The article says that some popular .com sites would be worried about migrating over to .xxx because of losing viewers, but there's no reason for that. Keep the .com, have it redirect to .xxx so that you won't really have to change much of anything. And then people with kids can filter .xxx and the kids won't see anything they shouldn't. It would be even better if ICann mandated the use of .xxx for obvious adult content, but then they'd have to take responsibility for content, which I can understand them not wanting to do.
Really though, industry specific domain names is a good thing, IMO. .com is awfully crowded as it is.

There was a pr0n lobby that was pushing for requried .xxx designation, so that parents and other groups couldn't complain about how easy it was for kids to access pr0n. Glad the extension went through, and I, too, hope that any (truly) adult content is required to be on the .xxx extension at some point.

I would rather you just weren't allowed to use the internet. Seriously, the internet is possibly the greatest tool for open and free communication without geographical or idealogical boundaries and I really don't want any dipshits fucking it up because thier kid saw a penis.

Um, I don't think making extension change is going to stop the proliferation of XXX sites. Way to freak out over nothing there.

It's not, but I still don't want to hear people arguing for the cause of censoring the internet. It is that important.

I don't want Net Censorship either. But I DO think that there needs to be some effective ways for parents to control their kids access to things on the Net when the parents can't be there. Current filters suck much ass, and filter way too much content they shouldn't, not to mention that they are trivial to get around. Adult content is just that, it's for adults. The pr0n industry should welcome their own little clearly delineated red light district on the Net, because it removes an excuse from the logic-sucking parasites who want ALL pr0n banned for all time, 4 TEH CHILDREN!11!
Will it work perfectly? Hell, no, as there will always be an assmonkey to defeat the blocks, or someone who refuses to be put into the .xxx range for whatever reason. But people who seriously believe that pr0n is a valid expression for consenting adults, like I do, should be happy to have their own corner of the net.
And as I said, I'd like MORE industry-specific extensions. .tv for Television shows and content, .mov for the movie industry, .store or .retail for retail outlets. Better classification is all good for something so large and open as the Net. There are no boundaries on the size of the Internet, and thus finding the information you want can be HARD. Anything to help that is a damn good thing.
Especially when one wants teh pr0n.
