I haven't run into many. The only ones I know of so far is the Cat Lady between Northshire and SW, and somebody that sells parrots in BB. I've also seen parrots dropped by buccaneers in the Deadmines.

Cockroaches in the Undercity. Snakes in Ogrimar. And ANYWHERE you find dragons, you'll find Whelplings. Kill them for a rare whelpling pet drop.
Apart from that, I know not.

Snowshoe rabbits (i think they are called) are sold by a vendor outside IF on the way to Loch. Sorta northeast in the starting area outside of IF. First mate whatshisname in the deadmines, the guy before VanCleef, drops a Siamese cat I believe. The chicken quest I assume you know of, but you need to be alliance I think to get it.
Oh yea and to get the mechanical chicken pet, you need to complete the 3 chicken escort quests. One in the hinterlands, one in tanaris and one in feralas. Then you return to one of the goblins in STV and he gives you a mechanical chicken. At least that's how it's supposed to work. Good luck completing the escort in Tanaris. Really.

I have chars on both sides. I play alliance more because I have more ties there (I haven't seen anybody from BC in months).
I don't know anything about the chicken quest. Is it upper level?

heh ... ok well it's sorta a silly quest and once you get the chicken it's soulbound. If i leave anything out someone fill it in for me. First go buy the Special chicken feed in westfall from one of the farmers. You need to buy it first because you will be talking to the chicken, and once it talks back to you, you must feed it the chicken feed. If you don't have it you gotta fly there and buy it, run back and hope noone has killed your talking chicken. Which trust me...they will. Fuck they will kill it as you are trying to do the quest so my advice is to find a chicken away from any players. So...find a chicken in some quiet corner. do the /chicken to it over and over and over. Yes a lvl 60 looks pretty silly doing this in goldshire and I was doing it for a good 5 mins till it talked to me.. but hey...the newbs got a laugh. Eventually the chicken will get a quest thing over it's head i think, and you feed it the Special feed. It will then drop an egg after a couple mins. This egg is lootable by anyone standing around so grab it fast. And once again people will kill your chicken as soon as you start this quest so do it away from any players. I understand horde can do this quest if someone posts the feed on the Gadz AH for them, but as soon as the chicken gives the quest, a horde guard will kill it so you gotta find a horde chicken away from any horde npc's.

Don't forget owls. You buy those in Darnassus, right at the entrance to the city (coming from *inside* Teldrassil, not the portal thing). There's a vendor next to one of those huge tree elder things.
There's a semi-rare vendor who wanders the canals in Stormwind named Timmy that sells a white kitten.
Inside Deadmines, there's an NPC cook named Cookie (he's a murloc) that occasionally drops a siamese cat (my favorite). He's on the backside of the boat, after VC.
And the Dalaran NPCs drop a Maine Coon cat, which only Horde can get since they're the only ones that can attack them.
Somewhere, (Hinterlands, I think?) there's a quest to get a pet Sprite Dragon. Those are the dragons you see in Ashenvale that look like a kind of flying white salamander with purple wings.
The pets in WoW are the only way fulfill my "dress up" fix. They wouldn't give us any fun or easy ways to make costumes and outfits just for the sake of looking different. So I've gone around and collected almost every pet I can find to accessorize. I really enjoy going to Splintertree post in Ashenvale, and sneaking around in stealth with the pets out. Occasionally some noob will see the pet and come running up to it out of curiousity. Ambush--> Vanish--> dead noob completely confused as to what happened when he was petting the pretty siamese cat.

I seem to remember that there is a dwarf in IF that sells gerbils. He stands next to the gnome that sells cardboard tubes.
Fucking Alliance.

Chicken pets can also be bought from a vendor at the shimmer flats raceway. I've also seen "lil smokey" who's from engineering.

I think there's a pet vendor in each of the capital cities.
Stormwind has got the cat vendor, Darnassus has the owl vendor, Ironforge has... I forget... gerbils, you say?
Orgrimaar has snakes, Undercity has cocroaches, and Thunder Bluff has prarie dogs, if I recall correctly.

Must be nice that the Alliance get not one, but TWO pets that only they can quest for.

Good. But I can do better ;) Toggle the run speed off on your character so you walk. Now take a pet out (I used an Orphan) and walk across Tarren Mills. You would be surprised how many high ranking pvp jack asses follow you across the zone incessantly clicking on you - in the belief you are an NPC offering wares or a quest ;)
