San Mateo man allegedly kills cat with golf club

Bay City News

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

A San Mateo man is in custody on animal cruelty and assault with a deadly weapon charges after allegedly killing a cat with a golf club this morning and threatening a woman who tried to intervene, according to police.

Robert Kelly, 62, was arrested without incident and booked into the San Mateo County Jail after officers found Kelly and the dead cat in the front yard of his home, according to Lt. Tom Daughtry of the San Mateo Police Department.

About 8:16 this morning, San Mateo police received a 911 call from a motorist driving in the 1500 block of Monte Diablo Avenue. The driver told police that she saw someone beating a cat with a golf club, and that when she tried to intervene, the man threatened her with the club.

According to police, Kelly was frustrated because the cat continually came onto his property and attempted to enter his home. Kelly allegedly became enraged when he saw the cat today and beat it to death with the golf club.

The cat is described as a medium haired blackish-brown spayed female adult. It is currently unknown who, if anyone, the cat belonged to.

The cat did not have a collar or a microchip and no one in the neighborhood has reported a cat missing, said Scott Delucchi, a spokesperson for the Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA.

The PHS/SPCA performed a necropsy on the cat, which showed she suffered "severe head trauma injuries," consistent with being beaten with a golf club, Delucchi said. He called the beating "a horrific incident. We don't see things like this, thank God.''

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the San Mateo Police Department Investigations Division at (650) 522-7650 or the Secret Witness Line at (650) 522-7676.
