...by porting FF11 to it. Now even next-next generation gamers can enjoy the boring grindfest that is FF11.

It does seem a bit odd, you figure anyone who wants it would have it by now for the PC or PS2.

I see it as more of a testbed for some of the more advanced features of Xbox Live for the Xbox 360. Microsoft needed something to work with to figure out how Xbox Live will work with MMOs, e.g. passing off login information to another service, maybe developing some sort of single sign on API, integrating messaging systems, etc. I would assume Microsoft paid for most if not all of the porting costs so from SE's perspective it was a no risk proposition.

Edit: fixed typo

I was thinking along the same lines. (That MS would help pay for the port) Sort of an I'll scratch your back you scratch mine. Square-Enix gets some experience with XBox 360 to maybe lure them into making games for it, MS gets a good real-world test and an OK title that might help move a few Japanese systems. One thing I will say is that the PS2 version graphics are terrible compared to the PC. I would be really surprised if it was something S-E did on their own.
