www.psobb.com

This came outta nowhere and smacked me to the ground. I did a quick search and didn't find anything on f13, but if I didi miss a post, just delete this one or point and lock.

Open beta begins today and lasts through June 9th. The demo can be had at Fileplanet and possibly later on today at the main site. I've got it downloaded, installed, and my account created but the servers seem to be down. Oh well. Shouldn't be playing at work anyways. Also, the price looks to be $8.99 a month.

Five years I've been waiting. Five years. My lil' Force shall slay again!!!

I was drinking when I wrote this, so sue me if it goes astray.

Never been a fan. I think I hold a deep grudge for the ghey way they spell fantasy. Spelling and grammar Nazis uber alles!

It appears to have some kind of anime stuff in it. If so, I will never see it. I'm glad people enjoy that type of thing though.

The Phantasy Star series was originally Sega's answer to Final Fantasy (back then on Nintendo). Good ol' times.

Phantasy Star Online has been around for quite a while, anyone can inform us what is new ? (Except that it's on PC this time)

I played it on XBL and it was decidedly meh.  Of course, voice-chatting with PSO players was a big part of the problem.  Oh, and the camera.  That sucked.

At this point tho, isn't this just going to be seen as a sci-fi Guild Wars, +fee, -pvp?

I've played just about every PS game. PS2 and 3 on the Genesis and PS1 and 4 courtesy of emulation. Had the original PSO on the Dreamcast but never upgraded to the newer versions till now. Yes, it's anime, but a very solid series. If you get the hankerin', I'd suggest giving the first two in the series a go (Master System and Genesis emulators needed). 3 was interesting as it had 6 or 7 possible endings depending on who your characters married during the course of the game. It spanned 3 generations. I've always preferred PS to FF which I know makes me KOS just about everywhere. Next to Zelda, it was pretty much my first intro to RPGs.

Not to me, I could give two shits about either series. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, PS just has less fanbois.

PSO on Dreamcast was my first experience with an online RPG, so I'm kind of biased by nostalgia, but it was a lot of fun. I think the gameplay itself still holds up, and I personally liked the colorful style of the game. Finally the characters will be server side instead of client, so the game's achilles heel, item duping, will hopefully be finally eliminated.

That being said, I would have gotten into this maybe a year or two ago. Now, with WoW, Guild Wars, it's just too late.

I think if you look it up, you'll see the original Phantasy Star predated Final Fantasy.

Looked it up and the first PS dates from 1988, the first FF from 1987. But I believe PS got faster released elsewhere then FF.

Any word on what the box will cost? I really enjoyed PSO on Gamecube and I would sport 9 bucks a month to play it online for once, but I'm not willing to lay another 50 on the box.

Wiiiiii!

There's no pvp right?

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

Ive loved Phantasy Star ever since the second one on my beloved Genesis in the summer of 1990.  Don't really need a PC version of a game I have twice already anyhow.  Once on the Dreamcast, and once on the Gamecube.  I only play offline where its an action RPG in a cybermagic type world where I can play androids running around with lightsabers or girls with a jaunty beret and a giant sniper rifle.   Its like a fun Diablo in its own way.

THANK GOD THE GAME SUPPORTS GAMEPADS

This is a port of a 5 year old 'console' game so expect shitty controls and dated gameplay. I'd suggest people skip this one if you don't own a gamepad for your PC and aren't nostalgic about the Phantasy Star series. But hey it's free, so what the hell find out for yourself. The real meat to look forward to is Phantasy Star Universe, a true sequel which should be out in a year or two.

Older versions had PvP so I would expect this one to support it too although it's not terribly fun. It's all about positioning and who gets the first shot off.
