NEW YORK-May 5, 2005 — Christie's auction house has won a fat, multi-million dollar prize in a game of rock-paper-scissors.

The Japanese owner of four expensive paintings says he turned to the playground game as a tie-breaker when he couldn't decide on Christie's or Sotheby's to sell the artwork.

Christie's won by choosing scissors, defeating Sotheby's paper.

The paintings went for $ 17.8 million in Wednesday's auction. The auction house hasn't said the exact commission, but it's well over $1 million on the most expensive painting alone.

The World Rock-Paper-Scissors Society called the contest the R.P.S. Match of the Century.
